End the Financial Irresponsibility of the War in Iraq

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2.com
Donald Rumsfeld, in 2003, estimated that the cost of the war in Iraq would be $50 billion. Five years and more than $500 billion later, Iraq has turned into a sinkhole for American taxpayers. In fact, recent analysis indicates that the true cost of the war could easily top $1-2 trillion dollars!

That's more than any other war, except for World War II. Just think -- the war in Iraq has been more expensive than the anticipated cost of the U.S. implementing the Kyoto Protocol to control greenhouse gases ($300 billion).

Countless lives lost and massive fiscal irresponsibility to boot -- the entire affair has been one debacle after another. Demand that the U.S. better use its resources and return its troops home.

The war in Iraq has proved far too costly and not just in terms of lives lost. In fact, recent analysis indicates that the true financial cost of the war could easily top $1-2 trillion dollars! That will make it the second most expensive war in the history of the United States.

The yearly cost of the war has doubled since the 2003 appropriation of $74 billion, which the Bush administration expected to be the total cost of the war. And these estimates don't necessarily account for all the potential expenses, including

* disability pay and health care costs of Iraqi war veterans for several decades;
* replacing worn or destroyed military equipment and resettling the armed forces; and
* paying interest on the debt used to finance the war.

[Your Comment]

To date, the war has cost $341.4 million per day. Worse, thousands of lives have been thrown away in a misguided, high-handed venture of the Bush Administration. I urge you to help the U.S. use its resources better and more importantly, bring our troops home.

Sincerely,

We've plundered our coffers and weakened our military. Is there no end in sight? Or will the war only end when there's no money left and other nations aren't willing to lend? The domestic decline has been terrible. End the war and invest American citizens' tax dollars in restoring the United States.

There is obviously a big problem here. Putting ideology above the constitution and the higher good of the American people, and of the world we live in. It is time to swallow hard, admit the mistakes and set about making it all right. And you are a big part of making that happen. GET BUSY, please -- thank you.

Enough is enough it has already been proved that all the reasons we are in iraq were fabricated by the bush administration. We have lost to many good men for a war we never should have started. How much money does bush have to have he already has more then even his great grandchildren can spend and i might add that was at the exspense of the people he was sworn to serve the american people. It is time to stand up to the number one terroist in the world president bush and tell him enough! Send our guys home and lets clean up our own back yard before we try to clean up someone elses. Better yet impeach bush for the mess he has put the us in and start making him resposible for the debt he caused the american citizens. He is the worst president this country has ever seen. Stand up to the terroist and just tell him no. I think the american citizens have had enough.

Finally bring our Troops home from this hell hole created by U.S. itself, and Congress, get your money out of war armaments and other war related financial investments. Crime of illegal occupation and genocide of Iraq should NOT pay!

The Iraqi War was never legal. Iraq never had any Weapons Of Mass Destruction. The United States Government committed an unconstitutional, pre-emptive act of aggression upon a foreign sovereign nation that did not pose any real threat to the United States.

Since much of war expenditures went directly to US companies, and their lackeys like Cheney ,and also Halliburton and the Carlisle Group--they should have to disgorge their war profits. Impose a war-profiteering tax on these culprits. Nationalize U.S. oil.

We can no longer afford to occupy Iraq, or to engage in other imperialistic, exploitive endeavors on foriegn soils under the guise of force-fed 'democracy and freedom'.

Eveyone should start taking more responsibility for themselves. Iraqi for starters, then secondly, the American government, who should always remember who they work for.

No individual would be allowed to continue going further and further in debt - neither should the government be allowed to use the taxpayer's money going further in debt to finance the war in Iraq. It's time to bring the troops home and let Iraq pay for the war themselves.

The Iraq war has been the costliest blunder the U.S. govenment has ever visited on the American people and the world. Unless the Bush administration is held accountable, mass murder and wonton destruction is established as the acceptable norm. Once a great nation, the U.S. has fallen into miserable decline.

As a mother whose son has been in Iraq for six months, and will be there another six months, I know that the cost of this war, in dollars and LIVES, is obscene and must end.

As a Mother and concerned citizen, I want to extend my sincere sympathies for any families that have lost a loved one during this war. I would also like to thank all the brave men and women that have placed their lives on the line in the call of duty. As a concerned citizen, I feel that enough is enough. I believe we successfully completed the original mission of this war (from my understanding) and now, it is time to get out! We certainly do not need another Vietnam which most importantly cost thousands of lives not to mention the financial burden on our country. I feel the funds that are being spent on perpetuating this war would be put to better use right here at home in helping the poor, the disabled, the mentally ill, the homeless, and the hungry. Not only has this war cost dearly in human life, but this is an ongoing cost with the disabilities (physical and mental) that many of our Service Personnel are left to contend with. I, like many others, would like to see ALL of our men and women home once again.

We have been protesting against this unjust war since fall, 2002 when the Bush Administration was loading up shiploads of war materials here in the Port of Corpus Christi. The war-mongerers mislead the people of the United States and caused great harm to many innocent civilians and U.S. military.
