End the Financial Irresponsibility of the War in Iraq

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2.com
Donald Rumsfeld, in 2003, estimated that the cost of the war in Iraq would be $50 billion. Five years and more than $500 billion later, Iraq has turned into a sinkhole for American taxpayers. In fact, recent analysis indicates that the true cost of the war could easily top $1-2 trillion dollars!

That's more than any other war, except for World War II. Just think -- the war in Iraq has been more expensive than the anticipated cost of the U.S. implementing the Kyoto Protocol to control greenhouse gases ($300 billion).

Countless lives lost and massive fiscal irresponsibility to boot -- the entire affair has been one debacle after another. Demand that the U.S. better use its resources and return its troops home.

The war in Iraq has proved far too costly and not just in terms of lives lost. In fact, recent analysis indicates that the true financial cost of the war could easily top $1-2 trillion dollars! That will make it the second most expensive war in the history of the United States.

The yearly cost of the war has doubled since the 2003 appropriation of $74 billion, which the Bush administration expected to be the total cost of the war. And these estimates don't necessarily account for all the potential expenses, including

* disability pay and health care costs of Iraqi war veterans for several decades;
* replacing worn or destroyed military equipment and resettling the armed forces; and
* paying interest on the debt used to finance the war.

[Your Comment]

To date, the war has cost $341.4 million per day. Worse, thousands of lives have been thrown away in a misguided, high-handed venture of the Bush Administration. I urge you to help the U.S. use its resources better and more importantly, bring our troops home.

Sincerely,

The Iraq War was to have cost $50 billion, now it likely will be $2 trillion dollars. Does Congress wish to help Pres. Bush in Bankrupting the U.S.A.? Too many lives have been lost to-date. We don't care about losing this War, because it was begun by a misguided, high-handed venture of the Bush Administration. To save American lives is more important than to say "We Win".

How is the spending of such vast amounts of money on this war justifiable? The only really safe place to be in Iraq is the Green Zone---to which we have astonishingly appropriated funds for "niceties" like malls and even a golf course! All so that our own corporate employees getting rich off this war can feel "more at home" while most Iraqis still don't have clean water or electricity. Top that off with the incredible financial burden now saddling future generations of hard-working middle-class Americans and we have a financial crisis in our country of unprecedented proportions.

Would a congressman ignore their own family responsibilities, for healthcare, food, clothing, gasoline or paying any of their bills? Of course not, but they continue to "rob" the American public by stealing $'s that is needed here at home for education, food, infrastructure repair and replacement, job creation, alternative energy investment, etc. If a person were to mismanage their own finances as this Congress has mismanaged the American buget, the family would be bankrupt and out on the street. Take care of your own people first Congress, because when we are all left w/out work, there will be no one left paying taxes.

The cost of the war is atrocious and it is breaking down the American economy. Add the greedy mortgage bankers and people like me are watching years of hard work disappear because I can't make ends meet. The value of my home is upside down for my mortgage. You should be fixing the American economy instead of pushing for oil at the expense of human lives.

I'm concerned about what state we'd leave the Iraqis in if we were to pull out now, but I've come to the likely conclusion that this guerilla war we've been fighting with the suicide bombers would hopefully stop if we did in fact pull out. There should be no opposition then to doing what this petition asks.

We are not taking care of our own people here. This war is a waste of time and valuable personnel. Focus on Afganistan and get out of Iraq.
