Keep Contraceptives on Drugstore Shelves

Target: Bobby Ison, Chair of the Virginia Board of Pharmacy
Sponsored by: Care2

A disturbing trend has begun. "Pro-life" drugstores, which do not stock contraceptives like condoms, birth control pills or the morning after pill, are popping up across the nation.

A full 98 percent of women of reproductive age who have had intercourse have used a contraceptive. By not stocking contraceptives, these "pro-life" pharmacies are denying virtually all of their female customers items they turn to for reproductive health.

The scariest part is that these drug stores could fuel a trend that could deprive entire regions of basic contraception.

Virginia has no stocking regulations, allowing one "pro-life" drugstore, DMC Pharmacy, to keep contraceptives off the shelves. If the Virginia Board of Pharmacy enacted stocking regulations, it would send a message to legislative bodies across the nation. Tell the Virginia Board of Pharmacy that drugstores in its state have a duty to stock basic health care products.

Dear Chairperson Ison,

I am deeply concerned about the rising trend of pharmacies that do not provide contraception, including condoms, birth control pills and the morning-after pill.

Contraceptives prevent sexually transmitted diseases and unintended pregnancies, making them vital to reproductive health. It seems virtually all women agree: 98% of women who are of reproductive age and have had intercourse have used a contraceptive.

However, DMC Pharmacy, a drugstore about to open in Chantilly, Virginia, is denying its customers contraceptives they choose to use.

why not just eliminate the vote for women? maybe return to the jim crow laws? hey, what's wrong with slavery? any attempt to tell someone what to do with their body is an attempt to return to an america of the 1850's. we know now how important the constitution is and it msut be accepted to have our democracy healthy with a chance to survive the into the future.

I am not in favor of abortions... but just like condoms; the pill, patch, shot, implant, ect, are all forms of birth control! I am more disturbed by the 20+ classmates, that when I graduated from my high school in '06, were either expecting or already parents! This is my body, and my choice. Keep your laws off of it.

What are these people thinking? We are not a third world country. Birth control should be a woman's choice. These Pharmacy's and drugstores should do their jobs and fill the prescription and go about there job. They could easily lose a customer, but to lose many is far worse then just one.

No government or drug store/pharmacy should decide if one can use contraceptives or not. It is a personal choice and a responsible action that each human must decide for themselves.

I am outraged that we would allow a pharmacy to impose their moral choices on all. Have we not learned any thing from the years when people (specifically women) had no choice! Do we refuse to evolve???

Denying a person the opportunity to purchase contraceptives at their pharmacy also denies them the right to protect their own health.

This is not just a matter of rights for women, but averting the potential suffering of potential children who were brought into a world unwanted, and would possibly suffer neglect or worse. Lack of contraception would also mean that the abortion rate would go up, and as a pro life woman I find that horrifying.
