Keep Contraceptives on Drugstore Shelves

Target: Bobby Ison, Chair of the Virginia Board of Pharmacy
Sponsored by: Care2

A disturbing trend has begun. "Pro-life" drugstores, which do not stock contraceptives like condoms, birth control pills or the morning after pill, are popping up across the nation.

A full 98 percent of women of reproductive age who have had intercourse have used a contraceptive. By not stocking contraceptives, these "pro-life" pharmacies are denying virtually all of their female customers items they turn to for reproductive health.

The scariest part is that these drug stores could fuel a trend that could deprive entire regions of basic contraception.

Virginia has no stocking regulations, allowing one "pro-life" drugstore, DMC Pharmacy, to keep contraceptives off the shelves. If the Virginia Board of Pharmacy enacted stocking regulations, it would send a message to legislative bodies across the nation. Tell the Virginia Board of Pharmacy that drugstores in its state have a duty to stock basic health care products.

Dear Chairperson Ison,

I am deeply concerned about the rising trend of pharmacies that do not provide contraception, including condoms, birth control pills and the morning-after pill.

Contraceptives prevent sexually transmitted diseases and unintended pregnancies, making them vital to reproductive health. It seems virtually all women agree: 98% of women who are of reproductive age and have had intercourse have used a contraceptive.

However, DMC Pharmacy, a drugstore about to open in Chantilly, Virginia, is denying its customers contraceptives they choose to use.

Help to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, save lives, and save on avoidable medical expenses. Prevention is key.

Don't allow the Bush idiotic beliefs put American women back into the dark ages. Women have the right to rule over our own bodies. Don't let this misguided attempt to take away women's rights to take care of our own bodies in our own way. If a woman doesn't want contraception, she doesn't need to use it, but no one has the right to deny these choices for ALL women. You don't deny Viagra for men, or pass laws to rule over men's bodies, and that is just plain discrimination. I wonder how men would react if women passed laws to outlaw the use of Viagra.

It is outrageous that the religious views of some are infringeing upon the healthcare rights of all of the women within their reach. Those who do not believe in contraceptives are encouraged to not use them. The rest of the population should not be controlled or limited in their choices of reproductive options. . We do not want to return to a time before AIDS--when unwanted pregnancy, in or out of wedlock was the worst that could happen. Not that that wasn't bad enough for the women involved. . Do not allow this dangerous precedent to stand

If you're going to sell Viagra to the men, how're women supposed to protect themselves from pregnancy while they meet their poor, needy partners "needs" ? Do you provide a bus ticket out of town for the men in case thier partner comes up pregnant? Makes the same kind of sense. How is it you're not advocating that the men "tie it in a knot" ?

These are health care products. There needs to be a strong line here between church and state. It is not the right for one American to deny the right to reproductive health because of another Americans difference in religious beliefs. This is not a country were religious persecution is "ok!"

This seems to be a case of violation of separation of church and state. as provided for in the U.S. Constitution. Members of the Virginia Board Pharmacy have an obligation to have drugstores in its stock basic health care products which may be needed by their patrons, This must definitely apply to Pharmacy Boards throughout this country!!

I am a new father, and love children, however we don't plan to have any more at this time. Aren't birth control pills / morning after pills available from an M.D.? I'm not sure I understand the problem there... I strongly believe basic contraception (condoms etc...) should be available at a pharmacy. Furthermore, any drug store refusing to sell condoms probably will not get my business.
