Keep Contraceptives on Drugstore Shelves

Target: Bobby Ison, Chair of the Virginia Board of Pharmacy
Sponsored by: Care2

A disturbing trend has begun. "Pro-life" drugstores, which do not stock contraceptives like condoms, birth control pills or the morning after pill, are popping up across the nation.

A full 98 percent of women of reproductive age who have had intercourse have used a contraceptive. By not stocking contraceptives, these "pro-life" pharmacies are denying virtually all of their female customers items they turn to for reproductive health.

The scariest part is that these drug stores could fuel a trend that could deprive entire regions of basic contraception.

Virginia has no stocking regulations, allowing one "pro-life" drugstore, DMC Pharmacy, to keep contraceptives off the shelves. If the Virginia Board of Pharmacy enacted stocking regulations, it would send a message to legislative bodies across the nation. Tell the Virginia Board of Pharmacy that drugstores in its state have a duty to stock basic health care products.

Dear Chairperson Ison,

I am deeply concerned about the rising trend of pharmacies that do not provide contraception, including condoms, birth control pills and the morning-after pill.

Contraceptives prevent sexually transmitted diseases and unintended pregnancies, making them vital to reproductive health. It seems virtually all women agree: 98% of women who are of reproductive age and have had intercourse have used a contraceptive.

However, DMC Pharmacy, a drugstore about to open in Chantilly, Virginia, is denying its customers contraceptives they choose to use.

All women have the right to chose any kind of birth control that would like. Also with the epidemic of AIDS and STD's it is only intelligent to be using condoms. What are these pharmacies for? It's not pro life , it's pro dangerous for all women to not have birth control available. Lorrie Hargis Mother of 4 and a woman who believes in Freedom of choice!

"Birth control pills" are not just for birth control. They also control endometriosis, a common and extremely painful condition in which menstral lining builds up outside the uterus and bleeds during menstruation - essentially creating internal bleeding. Without the birth control pill, millions of women with endometriosis would be incapacitated several days per month, unable to work or care for their families. Without this pill, the economy would suffer from lost productivity from these women. No matter what your moral stand is on The Pill's use for birth control, remember the real health need for The Pill by even sexually-abstinent women who suffer with endometriosis.

The importance of using condons to help prevent the spread of HIV/Aids is the ultimate reason to stop this trend. The "just say no" and abstinance route are not working and will never work as long as there are genders with hormones and testesterones.

all pharmacies need to carry contraceptives--we need to keep the population down until people can actually get an education and/or the finances to raise children in the first place

As a working mother, contraceptives have helped me to have control over my reproductive health and life. Do not deny the same right to other women and families, especially in these economically challenging times.

If Pharmacy are taking on a "prolife" role then they are segregating their clientale and eventually will loose business. I should know, they've already lost mine. I don't believe that any Pharmacy should have the right to not provide any medication based on internal beliefs.

This is discrimination. Why would anyone be allowed to do this. We can't fire someone based on race, creed, sex, color. Maybe your right to birth control should be included.
