Demand Healthcare for Our Heroes

Target: U.S. Senate; House of Representatives
Sponsored by: Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)
The men and women who fight for our freedom and safety should NOT have to fight to get the healthcare they deserve.

More than 20,000 brave soldiers have been injured while serving in the current "war on terror." Despite these sacrifices, Congress recently tried to slash the budget for the VA's traumatic brain injury care and research centers that so many of our wounded troops are depending on. Congress needs to know that anything short of fully funded healthcare and benefits for our veterans is unacceptable.

Our veterans have earned the right to high quality healthcare. Sign the Healthcare for Our Heroes Petition to demand that Congress hold up its end of the bargain and provide full funding for veterans' healthcare and benefits.
deadline: 11-11-2006
goal: 8,000

Dear Decision Maker,

As Veterans Day approaches, I am reminded of the extreme sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform. These brave people have answered the call to duty to protect our nation and to defend our way of life. Over 1 million troops have served in the current "war on terror" and more than 20,000 of them have been injured in the line of duty.

Their sacrifice should be rewarded with the care, respect, and honor they have earned. Yet, Congress recently tried to slash the budget for the VA's traumatic brain injury care and research centers which many of our wounded troops are counting on. Worse yet, the Department of Veterans Affairs which handles healthcare and benefits for our returned soldiers currently has a backlog of more than 800,000 claims and cases pending with no plan to reduce it. Those 800,000 cases represent real people -- veterans who've served our country and their families -- who need our help and are not getting it.

[Your comment]

I call on you to honor the extreme sacrifices of our veterans by fully funding veterans' healthcare and benefits. It is the least we can do to thank them for everything they do for us and for our country.

Sincerely,

[Your name]

I am a Mother of a Marine that is still active service, deployed twice to Iraq. I am also a Grandmother of a Army Combat Medic that just returned from Iraq after a year there. I understand the military medical budget has been cut 30%. That is not right nor fair!

My dad is a vet who earned his rights the hard way in korea and WWII. He stayed a lifetime in the service and then after he was retired the took away part of the benefits they had agreed on as a part of his service. The government needs to live up to its promises and do the RIGHT rhing for all who have fought in our military.

They have served our country at a personal cost that usually means at a lesser pay rate than the general market place with fewer benefits as well.

You are sending people overseas to fight for this country. If they come back with injuries to due what we asked of them, we are morally obligated to take care of them. I sure as hell would not fight for a country that won't back me up when I need help recovering from the trauma inflicted by protecting that same country. If America isn't willing to take care of her vets, America should NOT be waging war.

I am a 20 year retired veteran with 100% service connected disability. I have tried to get appointments and I am told to go to a local civilian ER. My son was a Green Beret for 13 years and suffers from PTSD and as a result, a fall which required 2 brain surgery's. We have to fight to get his care as we live in a split area, it is a mess. Why can't we get care where it is available and with the best Doctors suited for the conditon involved? We deserve it--he deserves it and so do the many Veterans across the country who were willing to give their life for our freedom--and now--we are brushed aside and all promises are forgotten. Wake up and take care of the folks who took care of you.

These people are supporting our way of life. They deserve the best healthcare that is possible. These people are going to foreign lands and are being exposed to God knows what, if something should go wrong with their health, they deserve the best.

So what is being said is that they can volunteer to die but they can't get America to volunteer healthcare? It's one thing to cheat the "everyday American" but now the government wants to cheat the people who die for us? Is this politics or ignorance?

We send them into harms way; we expect them to behave heroically, and for the most part they DO. They give their all, and, for the most part, the government (WE THE PEOPLE), ignore them and wish they would just go away. Does this, in any way sound wrong to a political electee?
