Demand Healthcare for Our Heroes

Target: U.S. Senate; House of Representatives
Sponsored by: Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)
The men and women who fight for our freedom and safety should NOT have to fight to get the healthcare they deserve.

More than 20,000 brave soldiers have been injured while serving in the current "war on terror." Despite these sacrifices, Congress recently tried to slash the budget for the VA's traumatic brain injury care and research centers that so many of our wounded troops are depending on. Congress needs to know that anything short of fully funded healthcare and benefits for our veterans is unacceptable.

Our veterans have earned the right to high quality healthcare. Sign the Healthcare for Our Heroes Petition to demand that Congress hold up its end of the bargain and provide full funding for veterans' healthcare and benefits.
deadline: 11-11-2006
goal: 8,000

Dear Decision Maker,

As Veterans Day approaches, I am reminded of the extreme sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform. These brave people have answered the call to duty to protect our nation and to defend our way of life. Over 1 million troops have served in the current "war on terror" and more than 20,000 of them have been injured in the line of duty.

Their sacrifice should be rewarded with the care, respect, and honor they have earned. Yet, Congress recently tried to slash the budget for the VA's traumatic brain injury care and research centers which many of our wounded troops are counting on. Worse yet, the Department of Veterans Affairs which handles healthcare and benefits for our returned soldiers currently has a backlog of more than 800,000 claims and cases pending with no plan to reduce it. Those 800,000 cases represent real people -- veterans who've served our country and their families -- who need our help and are not getting it.

[Your comment]

I call on you to honor the extreme sacrifices of our veterans by fully funding veterans' healthcare and benefits. It is the least we can do to thank them for everything they do for us and for our country.

Sincerely,

[Your name]

They put their lives on the line to protect my freedom and they deserve to be treated medically for the injuries they accrued during their fight for this great country.

My son is a Marine. My father was career Army. They fight for the country yet they are abandoned and kicked aside. It's time to end this shameful behavior. Take care of our Vets for life.

Soilders who have braved to fight over seas deserve high quility health care coverage. Many americans who understand the struggles that a soilder goes though is not only broken bones and wounds. It is also a life long mental battle from within.

I have recently read about hospitals that were overrun with rats and unfit for patients, soilders who were mis-diagnoised with personality disorder instead of brain injury long term effects, post traumatic stress disorder, and depression so that the government could call their illness pre-exsisting condition and not cover their health care needs, and soilders who were sent home wounded or unfit for duty being required to pay back enlistment bonous. What kind of country treats it's soilders and war heros that way? Since when are budget cuts approved at the expense of the ill and infirmed men and women who so willingly served their country in this completely unpopular war that was founded on lies to begin with?

If we ask for a huge sacrifice from them, then we have to make a sacrifice too. Give up your pork barrel projects and put the money where it needs to go--helping our freedom fighters.
