Demand Healthcare for Our Heroes

Target: U.S. Senate; House of Representatives
Sponsored by: Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)
The men and women who fight for our freedom and safety should NOT have to fight to get the healthcare they deserve.

More than 20,000 brave soldiers have been injured while serving in the current "war on terror." Despite these sacrifices, Congress recently tried to slash the budget for the VA's traumatic brain injury care and research centers that so many of our wounded troops are depending on. Congress needs to know that anything short of fully funded healthcare and benefits for our veterans is unacceptable.

Our veterans have earned the right to high quality healthcare. Sign the Healthcare for Our Heroes Petition to demand that Congress hold up its end of the bargain and provide full funding for veterans' healthcare and benefits.
deadline: 11-11-2006

Dear Decision Maker,

As Veterans Day approaches, I am reminded of the extreme sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform. These brave people have answered the call to duty to protect our nation and to defend our way of life. Over 1 million troops have served in the current "war on terror" and more than 20,000 of them have been injured in the line of duty.

Their sacrifice should be rewarded with the care, respect, and honor they have earned. Yet, Congress recently tried to slash the budget for the VA's traumatic brain injury care and research centers which many of our wounded troops are counting on. Worse yet, the Department of Veterans Affairs which handles healthcare and benefits for our returned soldiers currently has a backlog of more than 800,000 claims and cases pending with no plan to reduce it. Those 800,000 cases represent real people -- veterans who've served our country and their families -- who need our help and are not getting it.

[Your comment]

I call on you to honor the extreme sacrifices of our veterans by fully funding veterans' healthcare and benefits. It is the least we can do to thank them for everything they do for us and for our country.

Sincerely,

How can they not provide the money for these Veterans? I thought Republicans for our military. Apparently not.

The greatest and most noble sacrifice a person can make is to give his life for another. Whether our soldiers come home dead, alive, gravely wounded, or permanently disabled, their sacrifice demands that we honor them with the greatest care we, as a nation, can afford. I'm for low taxes but I'd gladly have mine increased in order to provide all veterans with the best care money can buy. Whatever Congress needs to do to see to the permanent well-being of our troops and their families, it ought to do. Anything short of that brings disgrace on our nation. DO WHAT IS RIGHT, AND NOTHING LESS.

When our men and women go o fight for our country, nothing should be held back from them as they continue in service or come home (discharged) from the services.

I can't imagine anyone in this country not believing for a minute that our Veterans don't deserve health care. What kind of a nation are we not to take care of those who are taking care of us!

No one should have to fight for health care. But least of all, those who have already given us so much.

We sent our soldiers into a disastrous situation. To turn our backs on these brave citizens, when they need healthcare in unacceptable.

Veterans serve our country bravely. Some of their health problems are due to that service. We owe it to them to be sure they have the very best health care.

The last ting in the world you should do is cut the budget for Veteran's health care or any of their benefits. You, as well as the rest of our nation depend on these people to defend us and they do not get much thanks. What is required of the men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan is too much and they are dyng everyday. They are bing wounded every day for you and for all of us in the USA. They work in conditions of hell and we sit in comfort. Their lives are not their own, but ours are. Look what our great nation has done to the Viet Nam Vets. Let us not ever ever do this again. And while your at it, let's either pull out of the Middle East, or send them more help. I am disgusted with our government and the world hates us and knows we don't even give a damn about our own. We act big, yet we could be crushed more than we have, by 911 and the hurricanes. Children are starving. People can't afford health care or a decent place to live. the rich get richer and the rest of us barely make ends meet.....our morals disgust the people of the Islamic faith....and then we have the gall to try and make them live like we do. We are not better. Tonight I am going to a shelter where there are vets, and homeless families, addicts and abused women. You have turned your back on them too. God help us all.

War is not the answer to anything, but those who are made to fight should be covered for their health needs when they return.

We talk a lot about our troops but we have been very remiss in providing them with the safety they deserve. Let's not continue this shameful treatment of the men and women who risk their lives daily for us. They more than deserve the highest quality healthcare. This should be a national priority along with health care for all.

My dad is a WWII vet. From what I have seen of VA healthcare, it isn't even second rate. He needs certain medicines. The VA will only give him older versions of the medicines - which his doctors say he can't take because the newer medicines are so much better. He would not be alive without his medicine, so the VA is no help to him. They only want to give out old medicines that don't work as well as the newer versions of them. Now how is that quality healthcare for vets? The US government should be ashamed of itself. If VA care is so good, then that is what our US congress persons should have, too. Now that would get your attention, wouldn't it???

I'm a veteran and have also worked at a VA hospital for 5 years. I can remember it was back in the 80's when they started making it harder for veterans to get the care they need. They don't need to make it worse. Get caught up on the applications and get those veterans cared for!
