Demand Healthcare for Our Heroes

Target: U.S. Senate; House of Representatives
Sponsored by: Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)
The men and women who fight for our freedom and safety should NOT have to fight to get the healthcare they deserve.

More than 20,000 brave soldiers have been injured while serving in the current "war on terror." Despite these sacrifices, Congress recently tried to slash the budget for the VA's traumatic brain injury care and research centers that so many of our wounded troops are depending on. Congress needs to know that anything short of fully funded healthcare and benefits for our veterans is unacceptable.

Our veterans have earned the right to high quality healthcare. Sign the Healthcare for Our Heroes Petition to demand that Congress hold up its end of the bargain and provide full funding for veterans' healthcare and benefits.
deadline: 11-11-2006
goal: 8,000

Dear Decision Maker,

As Veterans Day approaches, I am reminded of the extreme sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform. These brave people have answered the call to duty to protect our nation and to defend our way of life. Over 1 million troops have served in the current "war on terror" and more than 20,000 of them have been injured in the line of duty.

Their sacrifice should be rewarded with the care, respect, and honor they have earned. Yet, Congress recently tried to slash the budget for the VA's traumatic brain injury care and research centers which many of our wounded troops are counting on. Worse yet, the Department of Veterans Affairs which handles healthcare and benefits for our returned soldiers currently has a backlog of more than 800,000 claims and cases pending with no plan to reduce it. Those 800,000 cases represent real people -- veterans who've served our country and their families -- who need our help and are not getting it.

[Your comment]

I call on you to honor the extreme sacrifices of our veterans by fully funding veterans' healthcare and benefits. It is the least we can do to thank them for everything they do for us and for our country.

Sincerely,

[Your name]

For the sacrifices they have made, some basic medical care is the least that can be done.

Not only has the Congress allowed the president to betray the interests of the average American for the interests of business cronysim, it is now proposing to betray the troops it has sent in harms way by denying the medical care they need and will need. What are our Congressmen thinking?

It is an awful state of affairs when our military personnel and famililies are struggling with healthcare costs and daily expenses as they face daily life threatening dangers overseas. What makes this situation more tragic is the fact that each member of the Congress and the Senate collect great benefits especially retirement while the military personnel suffer. IF YOU REALLY CARE rather than placating TALK WALK THE WALK.

These guys are too much! Cutting funding for the people who have become disabled fighting a war that these jerks wanted! I say we cut THEIR healthcare benefits and make THEM wait to see a doctor. They are public servants, they should have to suffer every indecency they bring down on the people they are supposed to serve.

We sent our men and women to foreign countries, knowing that so very many of them would be killed or hurt. Do not abandon them when they return wounded and in need. Do not put on blinders and pretend the war has not hurt so many.

Why do you want to hurt the very people that are fighting for your freedom, thet deserve the very best we can give them,so quit trying to take away what they need to be able to live in the besy way possible .

Our men & women who fight to protect our freedoms should NOT have to fight to get their health benefits. They should already have them in place to help them if and when they need them. Why would anyone in office want to not give our troops what they need, when they need it. These men and women have committed their lives to protecting a country that they love and it would be totally unacceptable not to be there for them when they need us. I think Congress should look at this as a no-brainer, be there for our troops. They were there for us.

My significant other is in Kuwait serving our country. Veterans certainly deserve the best care we can give them. They have given the ultimate sacrifice, often their lives for us. The least we can do is provide them with the care they need if they come home from war!

These guys have willingly given up their youth and best years in service to our country. They have left their home, families, wives and children. What more reason do you need?

Instead of cutting funds there needs to be an increase in the funds for the medical needs of veterans. To cover ALL medical care.

I think Vets should have the same health care as our representatives in Washington. Vets are the only ones who actually deserve it.

I am a VA worker, and it amazes me how Congress treats our VET. If they can put their lives on the for our freedom, we need to show our VETs that we care. That means provide them with the best health care possible.

If we ask them to risk their lives and limbs for us we have an obligation to care for them and their families. It is just the right thing to do.

My father has been fighting for 20 yrs or more to get his health care and pension from the govenment. They say he doesn't exist. Strange, many of his comrades in arms say they were in service with him and were there when he sustained the life long injuries he struggles with today. This is NOT RIGHT. Stop taking benefits from those who fight for our freedoms.
