Demand Healthcare for Our Heroes

Target: U.S. Senate; House of Representatives
Sponsored by: Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)
The men and women who fight for our freedom and safety should NOT have to fight to get the healthcare they deserve.

More than 20,000 brave soldiers have been injured while serving in the current "war on terror." Despite these sacrifices, Congress recently tried to slash the budget for the VA's traumatic brain injury care and research centers that so many of our wounded troops are depending on. Congress needs to know that anything short of fully funded healthcare and benefits for our veterans is unacceptable.

Our veterans have earned the right to high quality healthcare. Sign the Healthcare for Our Heroes Petition to demand that Congress hold up its end of the bargain and provide full funding for veterans' healthcare and benefits.
deadline: 11-11-2006
goal: 8,000

Dear Decision Maker,

As Veterans Day approaches, I am reminded of the extreme sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform. These brave people have answered the call to duty to protect our nation and to defend our way of life. Over 1 million troops have served in the current "war on terror" and more than 20,000 of them have been injured in the line of duty.

Their sacrifice should be rewarded with the care, respect, and honor they have earned. Yet, Congress recently tried to slash the budget for the VA's traumatic brain injury care and research centers which many of our wounded troops are counting on. Worse yet, the Department of Veterans Affairs which handles healthcare and benefits for our returned soldiers currently has a backlog of more than 800,000 claims and cases pending with no plan to reduce it. Those 800,000 cases represent real people -- veterans who've served our country and their families -- who need our help and are not getting it.

[Your comment]

I call on you to honor the extreme sacrifices of our veterans by fully funding veterans' healthcare and benefits. It is the least we can do to thank them for everything they do for us and for our country.

Sincerely,

[Your name]

I believe it is an outrage to withdraw care from veterans. We ask them to risk their lives for us. We must support them even if is means a raise in taxes.

I have a husband and son that are Veterans. They did their duty--now our gov. should do theirs. My husband and son work and strugle to make ends meet for their families. They served to protect those in the gov. just as they did for the everyday person. We as Americans expect our gov. to hold up their end of the bargain, and quite trying to change the rules!!

Whether your for or against the war on terroism has nothing to do with the care that men who have put their lives on the line to protect this country deserve. If we can't take good care of our own why are we letting so many immigrants come into this country many of whom may even be deserving veterens. The difference is they have selected this country as their own and take some responsibility for it. Too many immigrants come here only for the benefits it provides them. Their country is where they were born. They intend to go home at some point, taking with them some or a lot of what they have earned here. This is not patriotism. Let us take proper care of committed americans. Have any of you ever seen Soilent Green a movie of some years back. Well if we keep going the way we are with immigration don't think it couldn't happen here. We pay our servicemen little enough. Let's at least send them the message that we appreciate and honor them by providing them at the very least decent medical coverage.

It saddens me to no end that Congress says that they "support the troops", and can pull a stunt like this...Maybe Congress should "deploy" overseas and fight these wars...I'd support that!!

You ask our troops to fight a war, where there is no defined enemy. Then you want to take away health care when they are injured. How about you give up your right to your free medical treatment.

They serve any time some idiot in authority says they have to and they do it weather they think the cause is just or not. They think they're doing thier duty to our country and they get repaid by you morons taking away everything that is owed them. It's time the "greatest country in the world" started acting like it!

Of all deserving citizens, Veterans and especially those injured and maimed, are the most deserving of our sacrifices for they have made thiers. It is unconscionable to do anything but full funding-Would you cut your Healthcare benefits? Why cut/underfund theirs?!! Take the funds out of PORK FAT!

My grandfather, Vincent L. Aiken, was a gunner in WWII. He got the Veteran's care he deserved as a result of defending this country. Our government has a responsibility to protect those who've protected us. I don't necessarily agree with this current war, but the men and women we have put into harm's way need the coverage that Veteran's healthcare and benefits give them. A lot of money has been spent to put them over there, resulting in their injury and death! Don't cut the funding where it is needed the most - to help them after the fact.

This issue doesn't need any explanation. What is wrong with you people. Why don't you have Haliburton pony up some extra money for this since they're reaping all the benefits. Congress should be ashamed.

We veterans deserve better care than we are receiving. Republicans must immediately fund the VA so that claims can be processed in a more timely fashion. At many VA Medical Centers, waits for service are just too long. We taxpayers insist that Congress adequately fund the VA NOW!

Is it bad enough you take benefits away from the people who have services in passed wars but now you want to take more. It is sad that the riches country in the world treats their soldiers like machinery.

If congress can find a way to fund it's own healthcare and the 'war on terror' it would be unconscionable to not fund care for those who are on the front lines of this war and all other conflicts. They take on defending congress and the rest of us. This shouldn't even be an issue. Shame on congress and all other influence peddlers for looking rob our service men and women!

Shameful to send the bright future of our country to fight for the uncertain future of our country only to have them return to a bleak future with health problems and without the help they were promised.

It is a disgrace that health care for servicemembers is being cut. When a servicemember is injured in the line of duty, the *least* the government can do is provide all the quality care that servicemember needs. Anyone who votes to cut funding for them is without honor and should resign in shame immediately. (I am not holding my breath.)

The men and women of our Military Forces deserve the best medical care available in the Country. They are the people who have made the most supreme sacrifices for our Country. They are the people who deserve the best chance at living the so called American Dream. They, more than anyone deserve all the medical attention, both physical and psychological than any one. Please don't let our leaders send them to war, and then turn away from them when they need help. I demand the best Healthcare for our Veterans - no matter the cost. This is the most important ting we can do to show our gratitude and compassion for thses people.

How backwards can this nation get? Sending it's youth and future into the grist mill of battle under false pretenses and then not providing for the healthcare needs of those who are injured in the pusuit of the govenments policies. What kind of barnarians have been elected into office. You vote yourselves payraises while denying the poorest an increase in minimum wage, then give yourselves the best of health care while looking for ways to deny those who suffer the most grievous and catastrophic of injuries doing you bidding the same level of care you provide yourselves! And this from a body made up of conservatives who claim moral authority based upon their religious convictions (Christians). No wonder I do not accept or support any theological ideas as valid. It is all Bovine feces and so are those who extoll it's vitues, especislly the republican congress and the Bush administration.
