Reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Amnesty USA
Every day, more than 700 women are abused or sexually assaulted by their partner - and four are murdered.
If Congress fails to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), these numbers could get a whole lot worse. With passage of VAWA in 1994, rates of domestic violence incidents have dropped by almost 50% and incidents of rape are down by 60%.

VAWA is up for reauthorization in September and we must send a loud and clear message that 700 women a day is 700 too many. Urge your Congressmember to reauthorize VAWA. It provides desperately needed shelter, counseling, medical, and justice services for the 700 women and children who are affected by domestic violence every single day in this country.

There is a good chance that VAWA could be cut. If it is, funding for domestic violence shelters is at risk. Children who witness domestic violence are at even greater risk. And, we may slow the progress that we've made in preventing violence against women.

This petition has succeeded!

Dec 14, 2005 — On September 28th, the House passed H.R. 3402, a Department of Justice Reauthorization bill that incorportated several VAWA provisions by a vote of 415- 4. Then on October 4th, the Senate passed VAWA S. 1197 by unanimous consent. The last step is for the two versions to be reconciled. Thank you for all of your hard work!

To Congressmember X,

PERSONAL COMMENT

Ten years ago, the U.S. took a giant step forward by creating the Violence Against Women Act, which provides desperately needed shelter, counseling, medical, and justice services for the 700 women and children who are affected by domestic violence every single day in this country.

I understand that the Violence Against Women Act is now up for reauthorization by Congress, and I would like you to reauthorize it. If you don't, funding for domestic violence shelters is at risk, children who witness domestic violence are at even greater risk and we may stop the progress that we've made to address this endemic.

Please reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act.

This is shameful in a country like ours. This is not freedom. We push for human rights in other countries yet allow this to happen here. At least we can pay for the consequenses of abuse until it can be prevented.

Reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act because it is the only way alot of women and children are saved from abuse in all it's forms. My daughter and many other women I know have been helped by this act. It has to continue to be there for all the other women and children in the future. The violence has to be stopped on women and children now! We are not 2nd class citizens! We are the bearer of life and should be revered not abused!!!

I was abused by my first husband. I got out, but many cannot because they have been emotionally abused as well as physically abused. They are too scared and beaten down litterally as well as figuratively to leave their situation. They need help to take back their lives. Some even have to resort to violence to escape the violence in their lives. Help the abused women of this country. Help them help themselves.

The Violence Against Women Act has produced real results. With passage of the VAWA, rates of domestic violence incidents have dropped by almost 50% and incidents of rape are down by 60%. Domestic violence is an epidemic in this country, and this bill has helped us begin the process of ending this violence. Please stand up for the rights of women and renew this important law.

I was married to a man who was psychologically and verbally abusive! I would not have been able to escape my situation if it had not been for a Safe House and counseling offered there. I was lucky. I knew other women and children who fell victims to their abusers. If anything else in this country killed or maimed 700 people a day, it would be termed an epidemic, and funding would pour into eradicating the situation. Why should domestic violence be any different? Don't turn your backs on women and children in this country. Please support VAWA. Thank you.
