Reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Amnesty USA
Every day, more than 700 women are abused or sexually assaulted by their partner - and four are murdered.
If Congress fails to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), these numbers could get a whole lot worse. With passage of VAWA in 1994, rates of domestic violence incidents have dropped by almost 50% and incidents of rape are down by 60%.

VAWA is up for reauthorization in September and we must send a loud and clear message that 700 women a day is 700 too many. Urge your Congressmember to reauthorize VAWA. It provides desperately needed shelter, counseling, medical, and justice services for the 700 women and children who are affected by domestic violence every single day in this country.

There is a good chance that VAWA could be cut. If it is, funding for domestic violence shelters is at risk. Children who witness domestic violence are at even greater risk. And, we may slow the progress that we've made in preventing violence against women.

This petition has succeeded!

Dec 14, 2005 — On September 28th, the House passed H.R. 3402, a Department of Justice Reauthorization bill that incorportated several VAWA provisions by a vote of 415- 4. Then on October 4th, the Senate passed VAWA S. 1197 by unanimous consent. The last step is for the two versions to be reconciled. Thank you for all of your hard work!

To Congressmember X,

PERSONAL COMMENT

Ten years ago, the U.S. took a giant step forward by creating the Violence Against Women Act, which provides desperately needed shelter, counseling, medical, and justice services for the 700 women and children who are affected by domestic violence every single day in this country.

I understand that the Violence Against Women Act is now up for reauthorization by Congress, and I would like you to reauthorize it. If you don't, funding for domestic violence shelters is at risk, children who witness domestic violence are at even greater risk and we may stop the progress that we've made to address this endemic.

Please reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act.

Actively responsible good government is the only real protection the people have against those that would take advantage of them.

With all the talk we've heard lately about "Homeland Security", does this country mean what it says? Do FEMALE Americans have a right to homeland security, or not? With all the violent crime that exists outside locked doors, do we have the right to be safe inside our own homes, from attacks by the men who are morally obligated to PROTECT us? Or is this country more like Afghanistan, where men can abuse women with impunity? Let's not devolve to the Dark Ages, America! Women are people, too!

Every day women are abused. Some will die. We need to do something to prevent it.

Women deserve the right to be safe in their own homes, and without the fear that if they are abused they could be ignored.

Because of the trauma suffered by troops in the Iraq war, domestic violence and spousal abuse by returning soldiers, even to the point of murder, has increased and will keep on increasing. This is another of the costs of this unlawful war. Help the innocent spouses and children; and ALL the many victims of the domestic violence that takes place every day.

To reauthorize this act is to save the victims of violence, more specifically the children. It is quite apparent now that children witnessing this abhorrent behavior will grow up thinking this is the norm, perpetrating future violence upon society.
