Every day, more than 700 women are abused or sexually assaulted by their partner - and four are murdered.
If Congress fails to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), these numbers could get a whole lot worse. With passage of VAWA in 1994, rates of domestic violence incidents have dropped by almost 50% and incidents of rape are down by 60%.
VAWA is up for reauthorization in September and we
must send a loud and clear message that 700 women a day is 700 too many. Urge your Congressmember to reauthorize VAWA. It provides desperately needed shelter, counseling, medical, and justice services for the 700 women and children who are affected by domestic violence every single day in this country.
There is a good chance that VAWA could be cut. If it is, funding for domestic violence shelters is at risk. Children who witness domestic violence are at even greater risk. And, we may slow the progress that we've made in preventing violence against women.
We signed the “Reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act” petition!

My nightmare may be over but the scars are still there. For a long time I felt ashamed and hid that a was abused & raped by my ex-husband. I finally told my parents and friends what happened. I still cry and I still feel the pain. My dad & mom saved my life. When I left "HIM" not a soul knew I was abused and raped. Now I'm free but women that are abused or raped need laws that will protect us. I just lost my Aunt, she was once a beautiful woman until she married a man that abused her. She left "HIM" once but only went back for her boys (Now Grown). If only I could have done something. I know she's at peace for the first time in 20 years. I pray that My ex-husband and my Aunt's husband burn in hell for what they did.

I agree that violence is a huge impact on our lives. We never know who will be abused and by who. If we can work together to help prevent it, the less it will occur. If some women knew there were some many people out there who cared, they would gain strength from it and help fight back.

ZERO TOLERANCE for perpetrators of violence against women/children - there are NO "excuses" & "sorry" (for the 2nd/5th/10th time) is not an option! Eventually women DIE at the hands of their "loved one"! We continue to fight for women's rights & safety in GB PLEASE do the same in US...Max

A vote against the VAWA would be a vote to send this country back to the feudal system of women and children being chattel. This is unconscionable. Please vote to REAUTHORIZE the VAWA.

Nothing has really changed for women and children in this country. My children never received even half their COURT ORDERED child support. And Bushco has mounted an all out assault on womens and childrens rights. Even senator Spector who wrote this bill has voted against amendments that raise women and children out of poverty, government loans for education, and even food stamps just to give BIG tax breaks to the rich by saying these social cuts are needed to balance the budget. Abuse in many cases is caused by poverty, ignorance, police who fail to enforce restaining orders and judges who fail to hold the abusers accountable by setting low bail amounts that set the perpetrators free to abuse and threaten again. Law makers give with one hand and take with the other.

We need to have protection for abused women as some of them have no where to go but to stay in a violent marriage or die. Let't protect them as much as we can.

Congress should not condone any sub-standard, unlawful, or violence towards women. To do so is a step backward from all that has been achieved in civil rights over the last fifty years.

This cycle of violence needs to end. Only through education and awareness will need become obvious enough to begin the change.
