Stand Strong Against Polar Bear Hunting

Target: Dale Hall, Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund
Hunting polar bears is illegal in the United States. The recent decision to list the polar bear as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act closed a gaping loophole in the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) that had allowed wealthy U.S. trophy hunters to kill polar bears in Canada, where such hunting is legal, and import polar bear trophies into the U.S.

But now Safari Club International, a big game trophy hunters' club, is suing the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to reverse this ban on importing polar bear trophies. More than 900 polar bear heads and hides had been imported into the U.S since 1994 because of the MMPA loophole.

We have to do everything we can to prevent the polar bear's downward spiral. We need the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to stand strong on polar bear trophy hunting - urge Director Dale Hall to uphold the ban on importing polar bear hunting trophies from Canada.

Dear Director Hall,

I am writing in support of the recent ban on importation of polar bear trophies from Canada. I am disturbed to learn about Safari Club International's attempts to reverse this ban.

Polar bear populations are already declining due to melting sea ice, and bears continue to be stressed and threatened due to oil and gas exploration. Polar bears do not need the added stress from trophy hunting.

Polar bears are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act and should be protected. Please stand firm on prohibiting the importation of polar bear parts.

Sincerely,

Polar bears along with all other wildlife should be protected in every way including protection from those who carry guns

This is a giant loophole that needs to be closed !! If polar bears are endangered in the US - they are endangered in Canada as well. While we can't stop the hunting there -- the "trophies" shouldn't be allowed in the states !!!

Allowing people to import polar bear parts and trophies would unquestionably encourage people to hunt polar bears. As polar bears are listed as threated under the Endangered Species Act, you cannot encourage people to hunt them for sport!

At this point we should arm the bears so they can target mindless human mammals who think they need to hang stuffed trophies on the wall to augment their social status.

The polar bears are already suffering from the effects of global warming as their numbers decrease, and now hunting for sport will surely make the decline even greater. We need to protect as many polar bears as possible in case the climate gets even worse.

There should be a ban on polar bear trophies as polar bear hunting should be illegal and so should owning their body parts. The polar bear has enough to worry about with loss of habitat because of global warming than to have to hide from hunters who view them only as trophies. Please do all you can to make this practise an illegal one. Thank you so much.

Global warming is threat enough. This is inhumane.

Polar bears don't need any more stresses or threats, and no one needs to hang a polar bear head on their wall. Do not reverse the new ban on importing polar bear hunting trophies.
