Hunting polar bears is illegal in the United States. The recent decision to list the polar bear as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act closed a gaping loophole in the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) that had allowed wealthy U.S. trophy hunters to kill polar bears in Canada, where such hunting is legal, and import polar bear trophies into the U.S.
But now Safari Club International, a big game trophy hunters' club, is suing the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to reverse this ban on importing polar bear trophies. More than 900 polar bear heads and hides had been imported into the U.S since 1994 because of the MMPA loophole.
We have to do everything we can to prevent the polar bear's downward spiral. We need the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to stand strong on polar bear trophy hunting - urge Director Dale Hall to uphold the ban on importing polar bear hunting trophies from Canada.
We took action on “Stand Strong Against Polar Bear Hunting”!

While I do not consider myself a bear person, I would still much rather see this Arctic predator in natural environments created by zoos and refuges than festooning someone's wall. Want trophies? Earn one by protecting Earth and its inhabitants, not by stalking members of a dwindling population of those considered game animals.

Why should the beauty and majesty of the last of the polar bears be sacrificed for the selfish gratification of those that have no reverence for life. Please - they are part of our environment.

Dear Director Hall,
My name is Michelle and I am writing to urge you to stand strong against Safari Club's International's attempts to reverse the ban of polar bear trophies from Canada.
As many people have probably said, the polar bear population is starting to decline due to melting sea ice and oil/gas exploration. They don't need any more stress from trophy hunting.
It seriously disgusts me that people would want this to be happening. Polar bears are living and breathing animals with feelings and should have rights, just like you and I. They are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act and should be protected against this type of activity.
I just want to urge you to please stand firm on this recent ban and don't allow the importation of polar bear parts.
Sincerely,
Michelle Naese

Hunting animals for sport is the most ridiculous human past time. Bears are not hides and heads, they are beautiful, intelligent beings. I consider myself a beautiful intelligent being, I hope that doesn't put me on the list of animals to be hunted.

Dear Director Hall,
I am writing to support a ban on polar bear hunting for trophies. Coming from a hunting family and as a former hunter myself I believe trophy hunting in general is a disgusting hobby. Though I support hunting for population control and the use of the meat this is just for "sport" and unnecessary.
Polar bears already have a difficulty future and are threatened so why would we allow the wealthy to exploit another of our wonderful creatures just because they can afford the expensive price tag that will come with the sporting license.
Mr. Director I ask you to stand firm against allowing this action to take so many of our greatest creatures purely for money and sport.
Sincerely,
Teresa Mohring

Allowing bigwig, selfish, arrogant, ignorant republicans to hunt polar bears for trophys is absolutely ignorant and selfish. If you are to allow this to happen I would assume you are no better than the trophy hunters themselves and you would be an embarassment to the wildlife profession.

Don't polar bears have enough problems with diminishing habitat and globar warming? So we have to add "sport" "advenutre" (and I use the term very loosely) hunters to the mix. Please close this loop hole and help preserve our wild places and wild animals. For us!

why do we humans take what we have for granted and then when it is only available on a piece of paper by way of a photograph, do we then gasp in horror and try make amends with artificial insemination. You are so fortunate to have these beautiful mammals, and I would urge you not to reverse the ban. I am sure you supported the ban on Rhino horn and Ivory - start sweeping in front of your own door.

It is unconsionable that we would allow further endangerment of the polar bear--just to satisfy the egos of hunters and line the pockets of those who profit from from their killing.
