Bring Justice to Victims of Rape in California

Target: Mayor Villaraigosa
Sponsored by: Care2

Although "rape kits," or victims' files containing DNA samples, interviews, photographs of injuries and other evidence, are standard for processing this horrible crime, they are often shelved and remain unexamined. Meanwhile, the perpetrators go unscathed with the potential to cause further harm to others.

The LAPD crime lab is desperately understaffed, with only 16 employees, compared to New York's 108 and Chicago's 52. More funding and more attention need to be given towards rape cases.

Only about 6 percent of rapists ever serve any jail time. But the experience of rape stays with the victims forever. They should not be left to suffer in vain.

A victim of rape is more than just a case number. Tell Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa justice needs to be served. The LAPD needs to tackle the backlogged rape kits today and fulfill the promise made to the victims. Act now to make rape prosecution a reality.

Dear Mayor Villaraigosa:

As a concerned citizen, I request that your government take stronger measures against those who have committed violent sexual crimes. Victims undergo questioning and procedures to form a rape kit, only to have it shelved and left unexamined. Consequentially, only 6% of rapists ever serve any jail time. This heinous crime cannot go unpunished. Rapists need to be apprehended in order to prevent them from committing further harm.

[Your comments]

Victims of rape deserve justice.

Please consider allocating more funds for the LAPD crime lab in order to have a more speedy and efficient process in tackling backlogged rape kits and evaluating future rape cases.

Sincerely,

The victims of any crime much have the enforcement agencies do whatever they can to catch and prosecute the criminal. Allowing the evidence of a crime to be shelved and unexamined is a crime against the victim.

As a victim of rape myself, this appalls me. I know there's alot of unlawful activities and things get backed up but you know theres alot of people looking for work out there and oh yea, what about the big bucks spent on drug arrests, sure thats important too, but just ask yourself is rape any less important?

Rape is a horrible hate crime that needs to be stopped. Too often the perpetrators walk free and commit serial acts of rape, sometimes going on to commit other forms of assault or even murder. Rapists, in my opinion, suffer from a mental illness and need to be identified and punished, then treated for their disorder. It cannot be ignored!

I am a victim of rape, at the age of 17. A son was born as a result. That was 41 years ago. The victim never ever forget it, and especially because back then the police made you feel you asked for it or you deserved it! We have come a long way forward since then. However, not forward enough! We can send men and women to the moon, so why can't we put use every modern day equipment to task to put the Rapist away and declare a messaae that this crime will NOT be tolorated! Making those who indulge in such assaultive behavior accountable. As long as there is no consistent accountability, the crime will continue to increase. When you think about it there is a double crime here. The individual who committed the rape, and the Police dept. for having the equipment and not enforcing a resolve. If this was an epidemic we would here about it on every news channel, every newspaper, and even more so on the Internet. Yet, it being a crime against a singular person, it appears "NOT that important. Rape has been on the rise for over 40 years. I view Rape is at epidemic proportions? This crime ought to carry a much heavier consequence! Of which the expensive modern-day equipment could solidify they have the guilty party. It's being used to get individuals OUT of jail! Tax payers paid for the equipment through taxes. It was said to be a much needed expensive equipment. To be pivitol in putting the guilty behind bars! Hello, what happened? If it's not being used for it's intended use, payback the funds it took to purchase it. Place it in a fund for counselling for the victim. Help our men & women retain some dignity by bringing the rapist to task and accountability. DISCOURAGE RAPE!
