Bring Justice to Victims of Rape in California

Target: Mayor Villaraigosa
Sponsored by: Care2

Although "rape kits," or victims' files containing DNA samples, interviews, photographs of injuries and other evidence, are standard for processing this horrible crime, they are often shelved and remain unexamined. Meanwhile, the perpetrators go unscathed with the potential to cause further harm to others.

The LAPD crime lab is desperately understaffed, with only 16 employees, compared to New York's 108 and Chicago's 52. More funding and more attention need to be given towards rape cases.

Only about 6 percent of rapists ever serve any jail time. But the experience of rape stays with the victims forever. They should not be left to suffer in vain.

A victim of rape is more than just a case number. Tell Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa justice needs to be served. The LAPD needs to tackle the backlogged rape kits today and fulfill the promise made to the victims. Act now to make rape prosecution a reality.

Dear Mayor Villaraigosa:

As a concerned citizen, I request that your government take stronger measures against those who have committed violent sexual crimes. Victims undergo questioning and procedures to form a rape kit, only to have it shelved and left unexamined. Consequentially, only 6% of rapists ever serve any jail time. This heinous crime cannot go unpunished. Rapists need to be apprehended in order to prevent them from committing further harm.

[Your comments]

Victims of rape deserve justice.

Please consider allocating more funds for the LAPD crime lab in order to have a more speedy and efficient process in tackling backlogged rape kits and evaluating future rape cases.

Sincerely,
[Your name here]

Remember that at least 2 out of every 5 women will be the victims of sex related violence in their lifetime. This is much too high. We cannot sit idly by while women are being harmed simply for being women. Please act now.

AS A SURVIVOR OF RAPE THIS IS A CAUSE THAT IS CLOSE TO MY HEART. WHEN I WAS 20 I WENT THROUGH THE WORST THING I EVER COULD HAVE IMAGINED AND IN THE END COULDN'T EVEN GET JUSTICE. INSTEAD OF MAKING THE POCKETS OF MAYORS, CITY MANAGERS, ETC... FATTER, THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE PUTTING MORE FUNDS TWARDS PROSECUTING THESE VIOLENT OFFENDERS. IN ADDITION I ALSO BELIEVE THAT THE STATUTE SHOULD BE EXTENDED FROM 5 YEARS TO INDEFINATELY JUST LIKE MURDER. THE LAW BANS PEOPLE FROM BECOMING VIGILANTIES AND YET PUTS THEM IN THE POSITION OF EVEN MORE HELPLESSNESS. THIS IS UNFAIR AND CRUEL. SO PLEASE, PLEASE, ALLOCATE MORE FUNDS TO HELP US SURVIVORS.

People who can commit such crimes are the bane of my existence. I know to many people who have to live with that everyday of their life. If I was in charge they would rot in prison or die, which ever they feared the most. I guess that sounds in human, but the people how do this are not human no matter what anyone says.No one can come up to me and say "its justifiable, excusable, or understandable." The only way I would believe that it is any of those things or close to it is if gob himself came down and told me so. Even then I would probably look at him and say "You may think so but guess what I don't and my opinion on the subject will not change. If that means I go to hell for it then I will! Gladly!" So when you bring it all together it not hard to guess what I think of this subject. I hope you believe in the same. If you don't then I feel sorry for you.

Rapists need to be brought to justice for the terrible crime they commit. As part of that process, "rape kits" must be examined, and not just tossed aside. Rape is a serious crime, and the criminals should NOT go unpunished. Being a rape victim myself, I know how it feels to be forgotten and left behind. We can no longer be left in the shadow. We need justice now!!!

Rape is not only a memory, but a fear that it will happen again that 1 out of 3 women in the US live with everyday! The other 2/3 live with the constant fear that it can happen at any time, especially in LA where the crime lab is understaffed and rapists get away without any consequences! I have two good friends from college who where molested when they were children, and their rapists have never been brought to justice.
