Bring Justice to Victims of Rape in California

Target: Mayor Villaraigosa
Sponsored by: Care2

Although "rape kits," or victims' files containing DNA samples, interviews, photographs of injuries and other evidence, are standard for processing this horrible crime, they are often shelved and remain unexamined. Meanwhile, the perpetrators go unscathed with the potential to cause further harm to others.

The LAPD crime lab is desperately understaffed, with only 16 employees, compared to New York's 108 and Chicago's 52. More funding and more attention need to be given towards rape cases.

Only about 6 percent of rapists ever serve any jail time. But the experience of rape stays with the victims forever. They should not be left to suffer in vain.

A victim of rape is more than just a case number. Tell Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa justice needs to be served. The LAPD needs to tackle the backlogged rape kits today and fulfill the promise made to the victims. Act now to make rape prosecution a reality.

Dear Mayor Villaraigosa:

As a concerned citizen, I request that your government take stronger measures against those who have committed violent sexual crimes. Victims undergo questioning and procedures to form a rape kit, only to have it shelved and left unexamined. Consequentially, only 6% of rapists ever serve any jail time. This heinous crime cannot go unpunished. Rapists need to be apprehended in order to prevent them from committing further harm.

[Your comments]

Victims of rape deserve justice.

Please consider allocating more funds for the LAPD crime lab in order to have a more speedy and efficient process in tackling backlogged rape kits and evaluating future rape cases.

Sincerely,
[Your name here]

Because do you know how it feels to be raped, & to be a victim of rape, & to live with it the rest of your life, & to feel like it was your fault & it wasn't? It don't feel too good. They need to be found & punished. They WILL do it AGAIN!!!Do you think rapists give a dang? They don't. Do you want your daughter to be raped? Do you want these jerkwads to get awsay with this kind of atrocity against women & children?

Having rapists DNA would help assure convictions & could be used to help detect if a serial rapist is on the loose. Please use all the tools at your disposal to put sexual predators behind bars.

I was raped. I am forced to live within a few yards of known rapists. This is absolutely hideous! You have no idea of the terror it inspires in me just walking around the neighborhood. My case went unprosecuted. I received no help, no support. Don't make others suffer what I did merely to save funds -- no money can repair what I have gone through, but your support can prevent the pain of others. The next victim, and I pray it is not, could be someone you love. Sixteen people alone cannot do all the work. Just help them, so they can better help all victims out there! Please, I'm begging you -- don't let these horrible criminals go unpunished.

I personally know of a victim who was not only victimized by the police detective who was "investigating" her case, but who had to deal with the rapist and his friends continuing to stalk her, getting NO help from the police to deal with this disgusting low-life. It is HIGH time to start helping the victims, not the criminals!

As the recent victim of assault who had the audacity to try and fight back I can tell you for a fact that the "police" don't deal with keeping women safe. I was arrested and the man who assaulted me has stated that watching me go to trial is going to be "more fun than watching a soap opera."
