In the past month, over four hundred penguins have washed up on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, lost on the way to their annual migration site of the Argentine Patagonia. Although penguins get lost every year in Brazil, there has been an astounding number this year.
It's currently a mystery why there are so many penguins washing up on Brazil's shores this year, but scientists have posed several environmental theories, such as overfishing, pollution and global warming.
Niterói Zoo, the largest in the state of Rio de Janeiro, has taken in many of the surviving penguins. Soon, the Oceanographic Museum in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul will be taking in the survivors to rehabilitate them and prepare them to go back to the wild.
Send a thank you to the Niterói Zoo and president Giselda Candiotto of the Zoonit Foundation, the zoo's rescue relief foundation, for making sure our disoriented friends get well!

Thank you for taking the time and using your resources for this rescue. It seems when the planet is under stress, it is the innocent that suffer the most. It is truly a magnificent thing to do this and my warmest gratitude to all involved in this effort. Thank you! |

I don't agree with imprisoning animals for human entertainment; still, I want to thank you for helping these penguins in need. |
