Get Big Money Out of Politics

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Common Cause

Wealthy campaign contributors and their lobbyists wield too much power in our political system. The influence of these big-money interests is a major reason that we cannot find solutions or even have a reasonable debate about health care, jobs, global warming, and many other pressing issues.

If we want to put the power of our democracy fully back into the hands of all Americans, then we need to change the way that we finance elections from top to bottom.

Under a full public financing system -- such as those already in use in Maine, Arizona, and Connecticut, and the one proposed for Congress -- qualified candidates who swear off special interest money and agree to spending limits receive public funds to run a competitive campaign.

Help get the influence of big money out of politics by urging Congress to support the Fair Elections Now Act for full public financing of congressional elections.

Dear [Decision Maker]:

We need fair elections in which third party and independent parties are not marginalized. It is about time we had open debates with all candidates, not the charade we are witnessing. Dennis Kucinich was excluded from debates, and now Ralph Nader is being scapegoated. We need ballot access, IRV voting nationwide (all votes count). Wealthy contributors, and lobbyists wield far too much power in our political elections. As reported by the Center for Responsive Politics, the insurance industry has contributed $525,188 to Hillary Clinton, $414,868 to Barack Obama, and $274,724 to John McCain. As a result, none of these candidates are pushing for a Single Payer Health Care-Medicare For All Plan. None of the health care plans offered by the candidates will adequately address the health care crisis. In fact, the candidates are arguing about how best to keep the insurance and pharmaceutical industry right at the center of health care, rather than their removal. The root of the problem is not lack of money for a comprehensive, high-quality health care system for everyone, but, rather, the channels through which funds are managed and spent. The privatization of funding medicine that permits profits to boom, at the expense of human beings- is the problem, not the lack of adequate resources to provide health care to everyone. The US spends 16% of GNP on medical care, which is almost double the percentage spent by Canada and most countries of the EU on providing comprehensive high-quality health care to all citizens and residents. Insurance and drug companies, and trade associations have enormous power which need to be neutralized now.

Corporate money MUST be removed as a factor in elections. The corporate sponsored coup of 2000 and 2004 might have given them enough money to keep them from cheating in the 2008 election.

We need some means for our people to take contol of our country... It is not right, not just that only people with access to big money stand a chance at being elected, but, if you look at HOW MUCH has been spent on this presidental election already... All of that money would help in so many other areas, instead of going to BIG MEDIA. Million upon millions of dollars... for what? Sheesh, we really need to wake up!

Only the rich and well-connected can get elected anymore, and there are too many quid pro quos for those who fork over the big money to fund campaigns. Sometimes it's hard to tell if we even have a government by the people, for the people, and of the people these days.

Get lobbying. big corporations and big money for special interest out of politics. Politics are for the betterment of people and society, not for corporate greed and profits.

It seems strange that millions of dollars are spent on a possition in government for a job that may only pay a few hundred thousand dollars .
