Get Big Money Out of Politics

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Common Cause

Wealthy campaign contributors and their lobbyists wield too much power in our political system. The influence of these big-money interests is a major reason that we cannot find solutions or even have a reasonable debate about health care, jobs, global warming, and many other pressing issues.

If we want to put the power of our democracy fully back into the hands of all Americans, then we need to change the way that we finance elections from top to bottom.

Under a full public financing system -- such as those already in use in Maine, Arizona, and Connecticut, and the one proposed for Congress -- qualified candidates who swear off special interest money and agree to spending limits receive public funds to run a competitive campaign.

Help get the influence of big money out of politics by urging Congress to support the Fair Elections Now Act for full public financing of congressional elections.

Dear [Decision Maker]:

If we want to put the power of our democracy fully back into the hands of all Americans, then we need to change the way that we finance elections from top to bottom.

It seems to me that the antithesis of democracy is unfair advantage. Big money provides such a bias, not to mention an easy means for corrupt influence. We need to even the playing field again so that all political candidates can campaign fairly and democratically.

We the voters have become cynical about our political system -- money can buy you anything -- bad candidates, bad legislation, bad policy! We REALLY need an intelligent change, one that stop money from being the most influential governor of our country.

I think it's a shame only the wealthy or very-well connected have a chance of running for any office.

BETTER YET, the airwaves belong to the people. The people are already paying for the use of the airwaves and the Federal Communications Commission should be authorizing what use may be made of our airwaves. The airwaves should be free to political candidates as a major PUBLIC SERVICE to the people and as a FOUNDATION for democracy so that ALL PERSONS who wand to run for PUBLIC OFFICE may do so and be publicized by the airwaves that belong to the people.

It is difficult to say we have a democracy when special interest groups have the power.

Americans deserve clean campaigns and politicans who will do what they say not do what ever it takes to get elected. Public financing is one way to begin this process. Just Do It!

Our government no longer bears any resemblance to the vision set down in the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence by our Founding Fathers. Corporate bullies with deep pockets should have no place in our election process.

How long will it take to have this public financing system in place throughout the entire United States? We need it NOW. Please don't hesitate, vote in favor of this system. Never mind what your "wealthy campaign contributors" say or do. Are you brave enough to vote for this "full public financing system? I hope so.

If I had known that you could be bought rather than elected by the people, I would have saved up and bought my own politician a long time ago. Perhaps the time has come to stop playing politics and become statespeople who really represent the interests of their constituency. Wow, what a concept.

Given the recklessness with which American industry has managed to weaken itself and the nation, it is imperative to keep them out of politics so that we may save the nation from the throes of their avarice.
