Get Big Money Out of Politics

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Common Cause

Wealthy campaign contributors and their lobbyists wield too much power in our political system. The influence of these big-money interests is a major reason that we cannot find solutions or even have a reasonable debate about health care, jobs, global warming, and many other pressing issues.

If we want to put the power of our democracy fully back into the hands of all Americans, then we need to change the way that we finance elections from top to bottom.

Under a full public financing system -- such as those already in use in Maine, Arizona, and Connecticut, and the one proposed for Congress -- qualified candidates who swear off special interest money and agree to spending limits receive public funds to run a competitive campaign.

Help get the influence of big money out of politics by urging Congress to support the Fair Elections Now Act for full public financing of congressional elections.

I THINK BIG MONEY HAS TOTALLY CORRUPTED US POLITICS AND THE MEDIA IS ALSO VERY MUCH TO BLAME FOR THEIR PART IN DESTROYING ANY REAL DEBATES OR FOCUS ON THE REAL ISSUES FACING USA CITIZENS. THE FACT THAT WE STILL HAVE ONLY A 2 PARTY SYSTEM THAT DOES NOT COME CLOSE TO TRUE REPRESENTATION OF THE PUBLIC GOOD OR WILL, IS ANOTHER SERIOUS BY- PRODUCT OF THE CORRUPTIONS OF BRIBERY PAYOLA FROM BIG CORPORATIONS. THESE ARE THE TIMES OUR FOUNDING MEMBERS OF OUR COUNTRY WARNED US ABOUT AND POLITICS AND MEDIA ARE ABOUT AS CORRUPT AND ANTI DEMOCRACY AS THEY HAVE EVER BEEN IN MY LIFETIME. OUR POLITICS HAS MADE US THE MORE UNTRUSTED AROUND THE WORLD AND CAUSED OUR DOLLAR TO DUMP IN THE TOILET AND IT IS NOT THROUGH FALLING! OUR ECONOMY AND THE WORLD'S ECONOMY IS ADVERSE TO EVERYONE BUT THE WEALTHY. OUR US POLITICS IS TEARING OUR COUNTRY AND THE WORLD ECONOMY APART. IT IS A SAD DAY TO EVEN THINK ABOUT OUR ELECTIONS AND THE CANDIDATES THE LOBBYISTS AND MEDIA DICTATE OUR ACCESS TO! TO CONTINUE DOING THE SAME THING WE HAVE BEEN DOING IS WRONG AND NOT PRUDENT. OUR CURRENT CONGRESS MAJORITY IS CORRUPT AND LACKS ANY OBJECTIVE DISCERNMENT OR NOBLE MORAL FIBER. ONLY A TOTAL REFORM AND CLEAN UP OF CAMPAIGN FINANCING WILL ALLOW PEOPLE TO RUN FOR OFFICE WHO HAVE NO CORRUPT AGENDAS.

our democracy is sinking in slime and greed,,,,,candidates should be willing to be honorable and use public funds for an election instead of courting those who would destroy democracy to make a profit!

Money and marketing are just the wrong ingredients for electoral campaigns. Let the candidates personally speak and debate on radio and TV, but leave Madison Ave out of it !!

Witht the american people trying to make it in todays' world, I think that more should be done for the people of the US then spending money on campaigns advertising. It is a shame that an average american can not afford to drive to work let alone be able to take their children to any type of activities because they can not afford the gas for their vehicle. We spend more on criminals then on the poor people in our own country.

Congress seems to be years, or even decades behind the times. I think we need more new blood in candidates and public financing might help bring in a wider group of candidates.

So the media is being paid through Senatorial campaigns - about half of the entire amount spent - according to the information in this article. Why are some names quarantined out when they may be the most vital and pro-American of any candidate? Yes, let us get the big money out of our political system. Those with ulterior motives and who are selfserving are the ones who suppress truth that should be heard in a political campaign. They are supported by the big money. They have an agenda and it is not to benefit the American people.

I hope a stream of individuals create a new wave of communication for our concerns to be heard and acted upon. Health care, climate changing, job markets across the country, the energy crisis, food prices... the list goes on. Where are the votes for health care reform, how is the Irag cost going to be paid for, why can't my young professional daughter pay for her health insurance without cutting other expenditures, energy costs and the associated record profits of the providers. These few concerns are not seen by Congress for the welfare of the common man and his family. My vote will be based on the future outcomes of the Congressional measures that will benefit the working class. The power of the dollar should not negate the power of a vote.

Only you know if you have the integrity to support a measure that might even the playing field between you and a new candidate for your office. I hope, for the sake of your honor, that you do.

Money in politics is criminal; it needs to be fair and equal for all to compete. There are a lot of good people out there that would be a better choice for president than the ones we have to pick from. But they don't have the money.

Our political campaign system is out of control. We must stop corporations from influencing election outcomes. Our elected officials are supposed to serve our citizens. We are in a facist country right now, and we have to return our government to serving the people of America, NOT the corporations!
