Get Big Money Out of Politics

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Common Cause

Wealthy campaign contributors and their lobbyists wield too much power in our political system. The influence of these big-money interests is a major reason that we cannot find solutions or even have a reasonable debate about health care, jobs, global warming, and many other pressing issues.

If we want to put the power of our democracy fully back into the hands of all Americans, then we need to change the way that we finance elections from top to bottom.

Under a full public financing system -- such as those already in use in Maine, Arizona, and Connecticut, and the one proposed for Congress -- qualified candidates who swear off special interest money and agree to spending limits receive public funds to run a competitive campaign.

Help get the influence of big money out of politics by urging Congress to support the Fair Elections Now Act for full public financing of congressional elections.

Dear [Decision Maker]:

The presidency is bought . This was very obvious when the BEST candidates (from both parties) had to drop out due to lack of funds and all we have left are professional politics as usual. Money should not make the president, the people should.

The money spent on political campaigns is a disgrace. Campaigns are too long. This terrible waste of money could be put to much better use.

It's about time Congress started representing the PEOPLE and not Corporations and Multi-millionnaire Boards of Directors. The money wasted on the campaigns could have been spent to educate our children or repair the broken infrastructure of this county!

I thought making lobbyist donations a campaign issue was silly - I don't care who gives it, I care that private money in large chunks is corrupting government. The better way is full public financing, allowing a role for small individual contributions ($100 or less).

Only recently was a caucus created that specifically calls itself for the middle class. That took far too long. It underlines how politics-as-usual is handled in Washington, to me. Take away the big-money sway, and give us back a government of the people. The Bush Administration (not that it is they who created this) ought to be the last where big-money talked and the people walked.
