Get Big Money Out of Politics

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Common Cause

Wealthy campaign contributors and their lobbyists wield too much power in our political system. The influence of these big-money interests is a major reason that we cannot find solutions or even have a reasonable debate about health care, jobs, global warming, and many other pressing issues.

If we want to put the power of our democracy fully back into the hands of all Americans, then we need to change the way that we finance elections from top to bottom.

Under a full public financing system -- such as those already in use in Maine, Arizona, and Connecticut, and the one proposed for Congress -- qualified candidates who swear off special interest money and agree to spending limits receive public funds to run a competitive campaign.

Help get the influence of big money out of politics by urging Congress to support the Fair Elections Now Act for full public financing of congressional elections.

Dear [Decision Maker]:

If we want to put the power of our democracy fully back into the hands of all Americans, then we need to change the way that we finance elections from top to bottom.

i thought my vote counted. obviously it doesn't. what seems to count is who pays the most to buy the candidate they want. be honest and admit it. quit having elections and quit lying to people about it.

Big money influence has corrupted our political systems and has undermined public confidence in their elected representatives. Our politicians spend too much time and money campaigning for re-election and not enough time providing a more effective and progressive government.

Public financing of campaigns needs to become the standard way of condicting elections at all levels of government. There should not be any loopholes, it should be mandatory, not voluntary!

We are sick of your greed squeezing the people dry. At least we still have the right to complain about it, but it takes you to DO something good for the people for a change.

I am so tired of hearing about the lobbyists and their influence on politics. I guess it's true that America is for sale and not just to China, but to wealthy lobbies wanting more wealth. Ya'll need to remember who you work for and who can and now, will fire you.

When George Washington became President of the United States, it was because at that time, the man who owned the most property, was considered the richest man. Times have changed, and special intrest groups are the dollar behind the political leader. Money should not be the determining factor in politics!

The only way that our country is going to survive as the land of the free with the rights that accompany that sentiment, is if the financial incentives for betraying this ideal are removed. Chief among these is the influence and financial contribution of the PACs, and the enormously expensive campaign system we now have. PACs need to be banned and public financing of political campaigns needs to be instituted. Otherwise I fear for this country.

It's not really a representative government if only those who can pay big can play at all.
