Get Big Money Out of Politics

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Common Cause

Wealthy campaign contributors and their lobbyists wield too much power in our political system. The influence of these big-money interests is a major reason that we cannot find solutions or even have a reasonable debate about health care, jobs, global warming, and many other pressing issues.

If we want to put the power of our democracy fully back into the hands of all Americans, then we need to change the way that we finance elections from top to bottom.

Under a full public financing system -- such as those already in use in Maine, Arizona, and Connecticut, and the one proposed for Congress -- qualified candidates who swear off special interest money and agree to spending limits receive public funds to run a competitive campaign.

Help get the influence of big money out of politics by urging Congress to support the Fair Elections Now Act for full public financing of congressional elections.

The U.S. government is bought and controlled by special interests, and we have the best Congress money can buy. That needs to end, now. It's time for a government of we the people, and time to give oligarchical elitism the boot.

Congress is supposed to be run by the people, for the people---not by multibillionasires for the multibillionaires. Allot candidates a set amount of money for campaigns, provided by a common fund, and nothing more. Cancel all the big-money showboating and stick to the facts and the campaign subjects!

Corporations aren't people. There money buys a lot of air time and pays lobbyist who voices drowns out the voice of the people block things like health care for all, blocking government negotiation on price of prescription drugs and blocking financing alternative energy to replace oil, have news censored by corporate sponsors in exchange for campaign donations to stop campaign finance reform.

Publicly funded elections are fair. The system we have currently is corrupt and needs to be changed. Big money has way to much influence and gives a huge advantage to candidates who are supported by this money. Candidates without the backing have no voice, while big money candidates buy up all forms of media to amplify their voice. This is entirely unfair. All candidates should have equal voice, as public funding of elections would provide.
