Give Us a Plan for a Financially-Secure America!

Target: 2008 Presidential Candidates
Sponsored by: Divided We Fail

It used to be that if you worked hard, raised your family and played by the rules, you'd be OK. But that's no longer true. Today, the burden of saving for retirement, paying for health care and supporting aging parents falls much more heavily on individuals.

For many people, the American dream is eroding. The presidential candidates have said too little about the long-term financial security crisis Americans face every day. Over the next couple weeks, the presidential candidates will do their best to reach voters in the final key primaries. Now, during this critical period for both sides, it is time to demand that leaders develop a real plan of action.

Dear [Presidential Candidate],

I believe that Americans who work hard and play by the rules deserve to be able to retire without worrying about their financial situation. Sadly, this cornerstone of the American dream is crumbling.

Millions of Americans are barely scraping by in today's economy. Saving for the future is near impossible. And traditional sources of retirement income, like pension plans, are disappearing.

[Your comment here]

It's not a partisan issue - it's an American issue. Every presidential candidate should be talking about it, and laying out clear, concrete and detailed plans for how to solve the crisis facing all of us.

The foundation of the American way of life is dependent on the ability of Americans of all ages to have access to retirement plans and health plans to sustain them throughout their lives with dignity and freedom from want.

I am one of the millions of americans bare ly scraping by and, in addition, I have a 4 yr old granddaughter who has Down Syndrome. So I'm not only concerned about my own future, but even more so for this little girl who will be unable to make a living on her own; she will always need to be supported and I don't see how, with a 9 trillion dollar debt, we can secure the future of the boomers AND future generations.

With social security becoming unreliable, many americans try to plan for themselves but we are still not allowed to save enough, the money we tried to save, a chunk went to pay for taxes. There needs to be more tax relief and a better plan for americans who retire.

I believe it is fear of losing our wealth that leads us to be less generous towards others. The great countries of this world have always been the ones that look after all of its citizens. Let't try to prevent poverty by giving hard-working citizens a safety net.

We must get out of Iraq now, not later, we can no longer afford this failed occupation, with rising gas and food prices. This situation is worsened by the heavy rains in the Midwest which threaten an important corn crop. Please vote against any more war funding and bring our troops home now.
