Give Us a Plan for a Financially-Secure America!

Target: 2008 Presidential Candidates
Sponsored by: Divided We Fail
It used to be that if you worked hard, raised your family and played by the rules, you'd be OK. But that's no longer true. Today, the burden of saving for retirement, paying for health care and supporting aging parents falls much more heavily on individuals.

For many people, the American dream is eroding. The presidential candidates have said too little about the long-term financial security crisis Americans face every day. Over the next couple weeks, the presidential candidates will do their best to reach voters in the final key primaries. Now, during this critical period for both sides, it is time to demand that leaders develop a real plan of action.

Dear [Presidential Candidate],

I believe that Americans who work hard and play by the rules deserve to be able to retire without worrying about their financial situation. Sadly, this cornerstone of the American dream is crumbling.

Millions of Americans are barely scraping by in today's economy. Saving for the future is near impossible. And traditional sources of retirement income, like pension plans, are disappearing.

It's not a partisan issue - it's an American issue. Every presidential candidate should be talking about it, and laying out clear, concrete and detailed plans for how to solve the crisis facing all of us.

I lost my retirement investments in my divorce. I'm 36 and I have to start over from nothing, since I can't count on the government to support me. I've worked for 20 years and I should have something to show for it!

What can be done for generations struggling now and those yet to come? Surely it will take much more than ending the war in Iraq and bringing troops home.

They say the American dream is crumbling. For some of us it has flushed down the toilet already and is way too late. We can't save because we lost jobs as well as everything we had already saved. We also can't afford health care because who can afford $300-400 a month for insurance when they only make $20,000 a year? You come live in the REAL world and see just how bad it has become.

This country is moving at breakneck speed back to the era of the robber barons because of the power of the corporate special interests. This glutonous grab for excessive wealth and power will destroy the retirement benefits that ahve been in place through the 40s through the 80s. The propaganda phrase is that these hard earned benefits are entitlements, implying that workers are being given something for nothing.Nothing could be further from the truth!!!!!! It is time to put controls back on the corporate interests!

There's been almost no legislative support for the middle income tax payers who shoulder the largest burden of tax to income ratio and generally run the small to medium businesses that support the American economy. Without your intervention as a future President the middle class will continue to erode as will the quality of life for everyone.
