Give Us a Plan for a Financially-Secure America!

Target: 2008 Presidential Candidates
Sponsored by: Divided We Fail

It used to be that if you worked hard, raised your family and played by the rules, you'd be OK. But that's no longer true. Today, the burden of saving for retirement, paying for health care and supporting aging parents falls much more heavily on individuals.

For many people, the American dream is eroding. The presidential candidates have said too little about the long-term financial security crisis Americans face every day. Over the next couple weeks, the presidential candidates will do their best to reach voters in the final key primaries. Now, during this critical period for both sides, it is time to demand that leaders develop a real plan of action.

Dear [Presidential Candidate],

I believe that Americans who work hard and play by the rules deserve to be able to retire without worrying about their financial situation. Sadly, this cornerstone of the American dream is crumbling.

Millions of Americans are barely scraping by in today's economy. Saving for the future is near impossible. And traditional sources of retirement income, like pension plans, are disappearing.

It's not a partisan issue - it's an American issue. Every presidential candidate should be talking about it, and laying out clear, concrete and detailed plans for how to solve the crisis facing all of us.

My 401K will be woefully inadequate; my Roth IRA is almost nonexistant; and Social Security may not even exist by the time I'm supposed to retire in 17.5 years. I am an RN and I will probably have to work till I die. Also I have two children to put through college. We are not eligible for any grants due our income. How are we supposed to do all this and retire too? Do any of you have a realistic plan for our future?

we are united..but by what? a lack of money, lack of jobs, lack of affordable housing. we need a plan..maybe nation wide rent control? you shouldn't be homeless if you work, but right now alot of people are just that, fully employed and still homeless. thats just wrong. price controls on some things would also help. as the autistic generation gets older..well, we need to really think about that..

We are supposed to be the wealthiest nation in the world. Why can't we have health care for ALL of our citizens? There are other issues, as an example, throwing money away in an endless war with poor strategy, which is making the other nations of this planet dislike us....
