Give Us a Plan for a Financially-Secure America!

Target: 2008 Presidential Candidates
Sponsored by: Divided We Fail
It used to be that if you worked hard, raised your family and played by the rules, you'd be OK. But that's no longer true. Today, the burden of saving for retirement, paying for health care and supporting aging parents falls much more heavily on individuals.

For many people, the American dream is eroding. The presidential candidates have said too little about the long-term financial security crisis Americans face every day. Over the next couple weeks, the presidential candidates will do their best to reach voters in the final key primaries. Now, during this critical period for both sides, it is time to demand that leaders develop a real plan of action.

Dear [Presidential Candidate],

I believe that Americans who work hard and play by the rules deserve to be able to retire without worrying about their financial situation. Sadly, this cornerstone of the American dream is crumbling.

Millions of Americans are barely scraping by in today's economy. Saving for the future is near impossible. And traditional sources of retirement income, like pension plans, are disappearing.

[Your comment here]

It's not a partisan issue - it's an American issue. Every presidential candidate should be talking about it, and laying out clear, concrete and detailed plans for how to solve the crisis facing all of us.

Every American who has worked and put money into FICA should be able to expect a return when they retire or become disabled.

Please explain your plan for paying the huge debt the U.S. has as a result of the Iraq war and policies favoring the rich. We the middle class will have to pay the entire debt unless policies change and all americans are required to pay down this debt.

WE NEED INDIVIDUAL SAVINGS PLAN TO REPLACE SOCIAL SECURITY. IF THE AMOUNT OF MONEY I PAID INTO SOCIAL SECURITY WAS INVESTED IN THE FORM OF A 401 OR SIMILAR PROGRAM THERE WOULD BE PLEANTY OF MONEY FOR EVERYONE WHO PAID INTO THE SYSTEM. IT SHOULD BE THE PROPERTY OF THE INDIVIDUAL NOT THE GOVERNMENT (which can raid and take from the funds) We need a secure retirement mandated INDIVIDUAL RETIREMENT SYSTEM. IT WOULD WORK.

Politicians need to recognize that the majority of Americans live check to check, are not able to save due to high prices and the general cost of living, and are seriously concerned about their own future as well as that of their children. This concern is no longer just an unfounded worry or something that can be dismissed as poor planning, but a fact of life.

In my day, ours was the land of limitless opportunity. If you worked hard, you would earn enough to care for your family. Your wife did not have to work just to bring in enough to survive. And the sad thing is that even with both adults in a family working, many families are not making it. They are not surviving well, or, in some cases, at all. All it takes, in many cases, is one serious illness to topple families into an abyss of financial insolvency. And woe be it to those who survive long enough to retire. For many, the struggle will entail choosing between eating regularly and buying the medication they need. The so called donut means that, when many of the elderly hit the "hole", they are forced to endanger their health and their very lives by going without vital medications. This is wrong, and a betrayal of what our country stands for. We need to enact legislation that will insure that this is once more the land of opportunity for our citizenry and not just special interest groups.

Millions of Americans are being forced into the position of working until they drop dead. No compassionate true Christian would ever even contemplate putting aging, ailing seniors in this position!

With the current fall of the dollar, the end of oil reserves, the debt to China, the developing markets overseas, the demise of the middle class in the USA is threatening our future as a people. This is our REAL National Security issue to focus on.

Our way of life, as we know it, is disappearing before our eyes. It's time that something concrete be done to bring the United States back to the norm. Americans need help more now than ever. We've had 8 years of nothing but a downward spiral. It's time to stop the talking and passing the buck and do something to help our people. The United States has become a haven for just anyone because nowhere else can they go and get everything handed to them for nothing while those of us whose families made this United States have to foot the bill. And where is our free hand-outs? Why do we have to throw away OUR founding ways (prayer, rights, way of life, constitution) to entertain those who come into our country wanting to change it to their ways? We can't go to other countries and have them change their freedoms to work for us like we're accustomed to. It's time to take control of this country and do something to preserve and protect it and it's real, true citizen's.
