Give Us a Plan for a Financially-Secure America!

Target: 2008 Presidential Candidates
Sponsored by: Divided We Fail

It used to be that if you worked hard, raised your family and played by the rules, you'd be OK. But that's no longer true. Today, the burden of saving for retirement, paying for health care and supporting aging parents falls much more heavily on individuals.

For many people, the American dream is eroding. The presidential candidates have said too little about the long-term financial security crisis Americans face every day. Over the next couple weeks, the presidential candidates will do their best to reach voters in the final key primaries. Now, during this critical period for both sides, it is time to demand that leaders develop a real plan of action.

Dear [Presidential Candidate],

I believe that Americans who work hard and play by the rules deserve to be able to retire without worrying about their financial situation. Sadly, this cornerstone of the American dream is crumbling.

Millions of Americans are barely scraping by in today's economy. Saving for the future is near impossible. And traditional sources of retirement income, like pension plans, are disappearing.

[Your comment here]

It's not a partisan issue - it's an American issue. Every presidential candidate should be talking about it, and laying out clear, concrete and detailed plans for how to solve the crisis facing all of us.

Like most Americans the harder we work the farther behind we get. There is no insurance, There is no retirement Social Security is all we will have. We must insure that it is there for us. After all we have paid in all these years.

I am disabled from an on the job injury and was assured by my lawyer that I would be able to rely on Social Security or SSI for help once I reached the appropriate age. That was the reason I settled for a lower amount of money at the time and that is why I was only allowed to sue for so much money at the time. Therefore, I must rely on the government to be responsible for my well being in my later years. I can't work so what am I to do if I can't receive SSI or Social Security. Am I going to be allowed to go back in and sue the company again?

Show us that globalization really is good for America, because so far I can't see it's benifits to the average American. We are going backwards not forward.

I am a 50 year old single mother of a teen-aged daughter, and an employee of the state of Arkansas. I am buying a home and have a small payroll deduction toward a retirement plan that I do not believe will sustain me in fifteen years. I am spinning my wheels financially, trying to pay off the little bit of credit card debt I have accumulated. With the costs of utility bills, groceries, and fuel costs skyrocketing, I fear I will not be able to keep my head above water.

Please do not do lip service to us. Talk about a hard core plan that you want the congress and sentate to develope and support. We do not want to hear we will give change to us. Tell us how you are going to do it.

America's strength has been in its strong middle class. Over the past eight years the US has become more like a Latin American country: a tiny number of super-rich at the top, a small number of upper middle class, and a large majority struggling to survive financially. This country is abandoning its poorer citizens. Consider hurricane Katrina. America needs to find ways to enable its many hardworking citizens to have a secure retirement - that means enough to eat and enough fuel to warm the house. If older americans can no longer afford these basics, there will ba a large number of angry citizens. Either the US must do more to protect its poor and its elderly, or it will risk an end to democracy, with armed revolt replacing government through ballot box.

We need to make social security secure for the generations who have been paying into it.

It seems we are going into another recession financially and I know this war has taken a toll on us. There must be a reasonable plan to get the US back on our feet and not just empty promises as usual. A REAL plan that may actually work and be put into force. thanks

We as people living in this great country should feel secure. We do not and I believe that our elected officials should make that happens.

As a recent study by Smart Money pointed out, nearly 95 out of EVERY 100 PEOPLE AT AGE 65 IS EITHER DEAD BROKE, OR HAVING TO WORK TO JUST GET BY.

A majority of us working hard in this country have zero to negative net worth. I think that is a big problem. We need some major changes!

The financial picture is changing so fast that some financial professionals can't keep track of it. It may be that everyone should be financially literate, but financial literacy is not taught in any school I've ever attended except in MBA programs.
