Give Us a Plan for a Financially-Secure America!

Target: 2008 Presidential Candidates
Sponsored by: Divided We Fail
It used to be that if you worked hard, raised your family and played by the rules, you'd be OK. But that's no longer true. Today, the burden of saving for retirement, paying for health care and supporting aging parents falls much more heavily on individuals.

For many people, the American dream is eroding. The presidential candidates have said too little about the long-term financial security crisis Americans face every day. Over the next couple weeks, the presidential candidates will do their best to reach voters in the final key primaries. Now, during this critical period for both sides, it is time to demand that leaders develop a real plan of action.

Your note to the presidential candidates on why a plan for America's long-term financial security is critical:

Dear [Presidential Candidate],

I believe that Americans who work hard and play by the rules deserve to be able to retire without worrying about their financial situation. Sadly, this cornerstone of the American dream is crumbling.

Millions of Americans are barely scraping by in today's economy. Saving for the future is near impossible. And traditional sources of retirement income, like pension plans, are disappearing.

It's not a partisan issue - it's an American issue. Every presidential candidate should be talking about it, and laying out clear, concrete and detailed plans for how to solve the crisis facing all of us.

When Ross Perot ran for President, the best thing he did for that election was to focus the candidates on the economic issues facing the country...the mounting federal decifit, unbalanced budgets, spending out of control. We need all the current candidates to step up to the plate and do this very thing. To not do so is shortsighted, dangerous and a huge disservice to the citizens of this country (now and in the future.) We need a President who can lead, not just react to what they've inherited from the Bush Administration.

Without action soon, the next U.S. president will find they have aspired to be the leader of a third-rate country.

Why doesn't America protect its citizens like the rest of the Western world? Take a look at how France and Germany govern for instance.

We hear so much about the things that these candidates support but they never seem to hit the important issues of the financial state of this country and how they propose to fix it. Gas is such an atrocity. Bif oil laughs the world is in chaos yet no one is stopping these fat cats from gouging our lives out. I will vote for no one unless they tell us how they will fix this. Let's just not support anyone until they guaranteem lower oil and gas prices. These prices are gouging. The whole market is being destroyed by oil barons and food hoarders. I want to know what these people intend to do and we need to know now before the votes are due infull.

I am a newly retired person, single, aged 66, and struggling to piece together a plan for my retirement. My only income is Social Security of $1325./mo. My rent is $1275. I have been disabled for 9 years and can no longer work. I am very fortunate that I saved money in a 401K that is now in an IRA to supplement my social security. I will be able to make it until my 90's with careful budgeting. But I have disabled friends who have no IRA and will be retiring soon on just their social security. I honestly don't know what is going to happen to people in their situation. They are worried. We all need good financial counselors who aren't expensive. Inflation in food and gas is already eating into my budget. I realize we are in an increasing squeeze.

The Medicare sell-out to "private insurance companies" is another arm-mortgage crisis waiting to happen. I am 66 have a Master's degree in Education, BA in English, and have trouble negotiating the Medicare "choices". The only good advice I got was through traditional gov't sponsored Medicare counselors. The private insurers "sell" unsuspecting elderly an option that is cheap and will let them down when they try to use it!! HMO on steriods!

This situation has reached critical levels and the people are going to be placing their vote for the candidate they believe will make the greatest effort in easing the tension in our economy. This has become the primary issue over the last year or so (especially), being the issue that hits us all closest to home. It's become, also, near impossible to even scrape by in many cases. It's been said before, but it definitely bears repeating...Something has GOT to give here!!!

Between my partner and I, we earn over $65,000 a year, have 2 children and own our home and because of the rising costs of EVERYTHING, we are struggling to keep our heads above financial ruin and have only the SS benefits we've been paying into since we were 17 to rely on for retirement! What's wrong with this picture? Please do something to help not only people like us, but also those that are worse off than we are and have to decide whether to buy food or medicine!

more and more americans are having financial hardship and it does not matter how hard they work or have worked. middle class americans are falling through the cracks, and they are what make up the majority of this country. There needs to be some type of solution to this problem, america does not seem to have any problem helping other countries so why is it we do not help our own?
