Give Us a Plan for a Financially-Secure America!

Target: 2008 Presidential Candidates
Sponsored by: Divided We Fail
It used to be that if you worked hard, raised your family and played by the rules, you'd be OK. But that's no longer true. Today, the burden of saving for retirement, paying for health care and supporting aging parents falls much more heavily on individuals.

For many people, the American dream is eroding. The presidential candidates have said too little about the long-term financial security crisis Americans face every day. Over the next couple weeks, the presidential candidates will do their best to reach voters in the final key primaries. Now, during this critical period for both sides, it is time to demand that leaders develop a real plan of action.

Your note to the presidential candidates on why a plan for America's long-term financial security is critical:

Dear [Presidential Candidate],

I believe that Americans who work hard and play by the rules deserve to be able to retire without worrying about their financial situation. Sadly, this cornerstone of the American dream is crumbling.

Millions of Americans are barely scraping by in today's economy. Saving for the future is near impossible. And traditional sources of retirement income, like pension plans, are disappearing.

It's not a partisan issue - it's an American issue. Every presidential candidate should be talking about it, and laying out clear, concrete and detailed plans for how to solve the crisis facing all of us.

I want to know that you will support repealing ALL welfare for wealthy American and all American corporations. I want to see you take all of that regained money and put it into social programs. I want to see you bail out all people in financial distress over mortgages, credit at the amount that all corporations for the last 100 years have been bailed out.

Stop leading us on as a nation of consumers. What is the GNP if not a convoluted economic policy? Help us to eat low on the food chain, why subsidize the beef industry? Support means to take care of each other and our resources of our planet. We are being buried under over packaging that goes right to the landfill. Teach us to be content with the humble version of the American Dream.

There is no middle class in America anymore. You're either really well-off, or you're barely keeping up with your bills, if at all, and cannot save any money ever, and nobody will give you a loan for anything. I see a "retirement" in poverty for my future, possibly dying on the streets of starvation, and buried in a Potters Field. We're supposed to be the best country in the world...explain HOW, exactly that is.
