Give Us a Plan for a Financially-Secure America!

Target: 2008 Presidential Candidates
Sponsored by: Divided We Fail

It used to be that if you worked hard, raised your family and played by the rules, you'd be OK. But that's no longer true. Today, the burden of saving for retirement, paying for health care and supporting aging parents falls much more heavily on individuals.

For many people, the American dream is eroding. The presidential candidates have said too little about the long-term financial security crisis Americans face every day. Over the next couple weeks, the presidential candidates will do their best to reach voters in the final key primaries. Now, during this critical period for both sides, it is time to demand that leaders develop a real plan of action.

Dear [Presidential Candidate],

I believe that Americans who work hard and play by the rules deserve to be able to retire without worrying about their financial situation. Sadly, this cornerstone of the American dream is crumbling.

Millions of Americans are barely scraping by in today's economy. Saving for the future is near impossible. And traditional sources of retirement income, like pension plans, are disappearing.

[Your comment here]

It's not a partisan issue - it's an American issue. Every presidential candidate should be talking about it, and laying out clear, concrete and detailed plans for how to solve the crisis facing all of us.

Currently we are mortgaging ur children's and grand children's future to freign poweras to prop up our deficit spendng. This is just plain criminal! The federal budget MUST be balanced, war or no war And it must be balanced including paying principal and interest on the outstanding debt!!

this is just one of many issues that our presidential candidates ignore, hoping it'll go away. why they hope to please everyone with their plans is bizarre. not possible! ignoring the most important issues as to not offend anyone is ludicrous. let's keep bugging the hell out of them until they build some platforms! let's get out of iraq and leave iran alone, let afghanistan recover, and iraq, of course - and maybe we'd have some money available to address our critical problems at home!

I work 40+ hours a week, my husband works the same. And yet we barely make enough to make ends meet. So you can forget about saving any for retirement. With 5 children and ailing parents we are on a constant tight rope with finances. And now we are being told that their isn't enough money in the budget to help us [or by the time we need it there won't be]. What are we supposed to do? Please think this out and submit your plan to help the American people.

Yes, I'm one of those who plays by the rules and can't afford good health insurance and yet those who don't get all they want! We need a better health plan for the US citizens. If the government would apply taxes to those business's that make gross amounts of revenue, rather tax breaks we as a nation would have the funds to have a good health program. But it's those very business's that don't want that kind of legislation, so they will spend huge amounts to have their way!

Like millions of Americans, I will be listening closely to what both sides of the aisle are saying in the coming weeks. I want to hear how the candidates plan to achieve the goals above. Sincerely Nancy Latimer

You'll need to make sure the bridges across the country are in good condition so the millions of elderly homeless (among the not so elderly) will have somewhere to live when they can no longer find work.
