Give Us a Plan for a Financially-Secure America!

Target: 2008 Presidential Candidates
Sponsored by: Divided We Fail

It used to be that if you worked hard, raised your family and played by the rules, you'd be OK. But that's no longer true. Today, the burden of saving for retirement, paying for health care and supporting aging parents falls much more heavily on individuals.

For many people, the American dream is eroding. The presidential candidates have said too little about the long-term financial security crisis Americans face every day. Over the next couple weeks, the presidential candidates will do their best to reach voters in the final key primaries. Now, during this critical period for both sides, it is time to demand that leaders develop a real plan of action.

Dear [Presidential Candidate],

I believe that Americans who work hard and play by the rules deserve to be able to retire without worrying about their financial situation. Sadly, this cornerstone of the American dream is crumbling.

Millions of Americans are barely scraping by in today's economy. Saving for the future is near impossible. And traditional sources of retirement income, like pension plans, are disappearing.

[Your comment here]

It's not a partisan issue - it's an American issue. Every presidential candidate should be talking about it, and laying out clear, concrete and detailed plans for how to solve the crisis facing all of us.

There's a lot to be said for personal enterprise, but pulling oneself up by his/her own bootstraps is a fallacy. Cute, but a fallacy. When you can balance right to life with right to have a job that supports life, then we can talk. Otherwise, the deck is, and always has been stacked socially, sexually, economically, legally, and politically. Social security IS an investment with a decent return, and it was more of one before the government got its hands in the till. Restore it, enforce the law on corporations with the same stringency used on individuals, re-invest in our infrastructure, put thinking back into our educational system rather than pointless and dumbing-down testing, halve the Pentagon budget for the money, etc.

By supporting the Fair Tax Bill, we will eleminate many of the burdensome taxes enslaving Americnas into what would have been their retirement years. It eleminates taxes on investments like retirement and pension plans, until they area spent in the market. Also excluded from taxation is bank accounts, Educations savings accounts, medical savings accounts. Furthermore people are only taxed once on purchases, at the point of purchase, rathar than filling out confusing tax forms on their Federal Returns. America Demands an Overhaul of the Tax Code in America so that all tax payers are taxed fairly, including corporations. Americans should not have to work into their seventies if they do not want to. Retirement is a choice and a right, and should not be accompanied with taxes that place retired people in poverty, or force them to become Wal-Mart greeters. Convert the tax system in America from Income Tax to Consumption Tax, by enacting the Fair Tax Bill. Give Americans the right to use more of their income rather than 'creating false tax break' policies, by shifting taxes from one area to another or from one class of tax payers to another. Fairness in Taxation is possible if Washington works for America, instead of America Working for Washington. A devided house will not long surfive, a devided America will soon fail. Unite for fairness in taxation and give America a chance to become prosperous again.

I think that all are going to be affected by the failing economy at some time or another. Gas prices, cost of living, and other needs of the Americans are not being meet. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer
