Protect Polar Bears from Extinction!

Target: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund
In as few as 50 years, America's polar bears could be gone.

New research by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) predicts dramatic declines in polar bear populations as global warming melts the Arctic sea ice these bears depend on for survival. It has never been so urgent to reduce global warming emissions and protect polar bears from extinction.

In light of these findings, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has reopened a brief, two week comment period on its January 2007 proposal to list polar bears as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act.

No more delays or excuses - it's time to protect polar bears and their melting homes. Sign our petition to submit your official public comment urging the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect polar bears from extinction!

UPDATE: The comment period has just been extended to October 22nd - please sign and spread the word today!
deadline: 10-22-2007

Attn: Polar Bear Finding

As a supporter of Defenders of Wildlife and someone concerned about global climate change, I am writing today to voice my strong support for the proposal to list polar bears as "Threatened" under the Endangered Species Act.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has just published a series of reports predicting that melting Arctic sea ice due to global warming could result in polar bear population declines of two-thirds or more in the next 50 years.

In light of these dire – and in the USGS's own words, conservative – predictions, I strongly urge you to grant Endangered Species Act protections to polar bears immediately.

In Alaska, we already see the effects of climate change, with the birth and survival rates of our polar bears plummeting as ice packs shrink and the bears' hunting opportunities become more limited.

The USGS's research underscores what we already know – global warming is real and is taking a devastating toll on polar bears. In order to save these magnificent animals, listing polar bears as threatened must be coupled with concrete steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to address the root cause of global warming. In addition, critical habitat for polar bears must be identified and protected. Essential protections against harmful oil and gas drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Bristol Bay and other crucial habitat areas must be provided to ensure the survival of polar bears.

Thank you for considering my comments.

Sincerely,

This is vital and it is the responsibility of us all to respect the place we call home. We are visitors to this land; we do not own it and if we did would we therefor not treat it with more respect; say like the flashy new car you just bought. This world is not free; we all have to pay our respect in preserving that which exists for future generations to enjoy. All leaders have placed themselves as such to be protectors to work for the good of all. That is true leadership quality. We should all be responsible for learning better ethics by which to live our lives.

one goes and many others follow. future generations will hopefully look back and say we cared and did the right thing. to survive sometimes you need to do without. turn off the coal burning plants, put more money and effort into r&r for alternative and reusable energy sources before it is too late for all creatures including the human race. i believe the true underlying problem is that there are too many humans on the planet. some real discussion must start on this NOW!

More pollution control and trees conservation must be done, to maintain an ecological balance in the world. The world would come to an end one day if these ice caps melt all the way and these human-beings who are the sole reason of this would be the suffers too. I request the Govt. all over the world of each country understands this and make a firm decision and action soon. Lets save wildlife and lets save the world!!!

As the world warms, the polar bears habitat shrinks. We need to reduce our carbon footprint to give the polar bear more ice space for thiers!
