Make New York Green - Expand New York's Parks and Open Spaces

Sponsored by: Campaign for New York's Future
New York City residents have fewer acres of green space per person than almost any other city in the country. In some neighborhoods, 12,000 children or more can share as few as three playgrounds.

PlaNYC, a plan to improve the city's environment and build a sustainable future, will include seven initiatives to increase open space and improve public health in New York City.

These plans include making existing parks and recreational sites more available to New Yorkers, expanding usable hours at existing facilities, and expanding the city's tree canopy cover from 24 to 30 percent by 2030.

These plans and others will promote increased property values, calm traffic and increase the health and quality of life for all New Yorkers, as it would provide at least 1.5 acres of park space for every 1000 people.

Dear decision maker,

I am writing to urge you to support three primary approaches to ensure that nearly every New Yorker lives within a 10-minute walk of a park by 2030:

- Make existing sites available to more New Yorkers. This includes opening schoolyards across the city as public playgrounds, allowing athletic
teams across the city to use existing fields and complexes, and completing at least one major underdeveloped park site in every borough.

- Expand usable hours at existing sites. This includes converting asphalt sites into multi-purpose fields and installing new lighting that allows for nighttime use of existing fields.

- Re-imagine the public realm. The City will create a new or enhance existing public plazas in every community and will green the cityscape through tree plantings and expanding the Greenstreets program.

Parks are an oasis in the city. In addition to the menal benefits of having a open space to relax in, it would benefit children and young people who need physical activity to remain healthy.

We are in desperate need of preserving quality air for the continuance of existence and establishing spaces for all to connect with nature and maintain peace of mind. Do expand parks and open spaces.

When I visit NYC, I am surprised at the lack of space. Please help to make NY green and support the initiatives that help make parks and spaces for children to run and adults to de-stress. This will promote healthier and happier people and communities.
