Stop the Violence in Uganda! Please Support the Peace Talks

Sponsored by: International Rescue Committee
EMERGENCY RELIEF ORGANIZATIONS ARE SAYING THAT THE STARK LIVING CONDITIONS IN NORTHERN UGANDA ARE AMONG THE WORST EVER SEEN!

The U.S. government can make a difference in the lives of nearly 2 million people by supporting the current peace talks!

For over 20 years the rebel group, Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), has waged a brutal war against the Government of Uganda. The ruthless fighters in this conflict have resorted to barbaric tactics of murder, mutilation, burning of villages, sexual enslavement, and abduction of civilians – especially children – to be forced to fight.

Our elected officials should (1) work for a conflict resolution at the peace talks in Juba, Southern Sudan and (2) increase humanitarian aid to this war-torn area.

THIS DIRE SITUATION MUST END! PLEASE TELL OUR DECISION-MAKERS TO SUPPORT THE CURRENT PEACE TALKS AND SEND HUMANITARIAN AID TO NORTHERN UGANDA IMMEDIATELY.
deadline: 8-28-2007

Dear [Decision-maker],

We call on you as our elected officials to intensify your political engagement to bring a negotiated resolution to one of Africa's longest running civil wars: Northern Uganda.

We believe that now is the time for the U.S. Government to act. We believe that the U.S. can make a difference in the lives of close to 2 million people in Northern Uganda.

The peace talks in Juba are the best opportunity in over a decade to end this war. U.S. diplomatic and logistical support is crucial.

There must be a peaceful resolution to the conflict:

- A non-military resolution to this crisis is the only lasting solution. There must be sustained efforts to seek a peaceful end to the conflict

- The U.S. should be persistent in pushing the Government of Uganda to negotiate an end to the fighting, begin a process of national reconciliation, and address the underlying grievances of the people of Northern Uganda

There must be increased cooperation from neighboring countries:

- This conflict is not just an internal problem of Uganda but has dangerous spillover consequences throughout this region. Uganda's neighbors must prevent and stop LRA activities.

- Armed incursions and LRA rebel bases in south Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo must be stopped from increasing threats to stability in this volatile region of Africa.

There must be increased humanitarian aid to displaced populations:

- Uninterrupted, ample, and coordinated humanitarian assistance is vital. The U.S. Government must increase its aid to one of the worst human crises in the world and invest in the future of the people of Northern Uganda through reconciliation.

- Humanitarian aid must address loss of livelihoods, lack of land access, voluntary return to villages, and decreasing dependency on external aid for displaced persons.

Jesus said it best: "For I was hungry and you gave me no food; I was thirsty and you gave me no drink; I was a stranger, and you did not take me in, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me. Then they also will answer him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?' Then will he answer them, saying, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me." (Matthew 25:42-45) Contained within every evil(greedy profiteering republican) act are the seeds of its own destruction. Adhere to the teachings of Jesus, as contained in The Urantia Book, or else suffer the consequences. It IS that simple. TRUTH has been spoken to power, Peace will prevail. Buck Fush! SUPPORT GLOBAL PEACE AND ECONOMIC STABILITY, AS WELL AS ECOLOGICAL SUSTAINABILITY... IMPEACH BUSH AND CHENEY NOW!

Don't let another Rwanda genocide occur. The U.S. could make a difference for the people of Uganda. We never seem to extend a helping hand to the great African nations.

Uganda need peace, and children need to be children, not minuature soldier killing and maiming people. It's high time to stop the violence and start the peace talks, now, before it's too late. There has been enough suffering, especially for the children.

In general the ONLY step forward will be NOT to start or maintain war but to stop one; not to continue to exploit but to restore. All these genocide crimes are ruthless and disgusting, but I think the worst is to enslave children to fight. These guys, IF they survive, will NEVER be able to have a life!

This is a top priority issue and these people really need peace in this life. It is awful how much suffering goes on. There is no point to this terrible violence but there is a huge point to be made at these peace talks and you must put all of your effort into this. These people, these children, they deserve to be of utmost importance as life has value. All life. These people are holding out to hope for these talks to resolve these issues. Please make it so.

This is so sad that we can fund a war over oil, but we cannot save these innocent people! Didn't we witness this in WWII? We stepped in then so why can't we now. As the world leader it is up to us to set the example and we should be supporting these talks anyway that we can. It is wrong for us just to stand by and watch these people get murdered.
