Stop the Violence in Uganda! Please Support the Peace Talks

Sponsored by: International Rescue Committee
EMERGENCY RELIEF ORGANIZATIONS ARE SAYING THAT THE STARK LIVING CONDITIONS IN NORTHERN UGANDA ARE AMONG THE WORST EVER SEEN!

The U.S. government can make a difference in the lives of nearly 2 million people by supporting the current peace talks!

For over 20 years the rebel group, Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), has waged a brutal war against the Government of Uganda. The ruthless fighters in this conflict have resorted to barbaric tactics of murder, mutilation, burning of villages, sexual enslavement, and abduction of civilians – especially children – to be forced to fight.

Our elected officials should (1) work for a conflict resolution at the peace talks in Juba, Southern Sudan and (2) increase humanitarian aid to this war-torn area.

THIS DIRE SITUATION MUST END! PLEASE TELL OUR DECISION-MAKERS TO SUPPORT THE CURRENT PEACE TALKS AND SEND HUMANITARIAN AID TO NORTHERN UGANDA IMMEDIATELY.

Dear [Decision-maker],

We call on you as our elected officials to intensify your political engagement to bring a negotiated resolution to one of Africa's longest running civil wars: Northern Uganda.

We believe that now is the time for the U.S. Government to act. We believe that the U.S. can make a difference in the lives of close to 2 million people in Northern Uganda.

The peace talks in Juba are the best opportunity in over a decade to end this war. U.S. diplomatic and logistical support is crucial.

There must be a peaceful resolution to the conflict:

- A non-military resolution to this crisis is the only lasting solution. There must be sustained efforts to seek a peaceful end to the conflict

- The U.S. should be persistent in pushing the Government of Uganda to negotiate an end to the fighting, begin a process of national reconciliation, and address the underlying grievances of the people of Northern Uganda

There must be increased cooperation from neighboring countries:

- This conflict is not just an internal problem of Uganda but has dangerous spillover consequences throughout this region. Uganda's neighbors must prevent and stop LRA activities.

- Armed incursions and LRA rebel bases in south Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo must be stopped from increasing threats to stability in this volatile region of Africa.

There must be increased humanitarian aid to displaced populations:

- Uninterrupted, ample, and coordinated humanitarian assistance is vital. The U.S. Government must increase its aid to one of the worst human crises in the world and invest in the future of the people of Northern Uganda through reconciliation.

- Humanitarian aid must address loss of livelihoods, lack of land access, voluntary return to villages, and decreasing dependency on external aid for displaced persons.

Please help end the barbaric tactics of murder, mutilation, burning of villages, sexual enslavement, and abduction of civilians – especially children – in Uganda. These are basic human rights under the tenets of the UDHR and should be extended to everyone, everywhere. As a signatory of this document it is the U.S's responsibility to provide humanitarian aid to ensure that all nations are able to live freely as according to the UDHR.

Mutilating and torturing and murdering others is against the law in the United States and it should be in Uganda as well. No human or animal should ever be tortured. Those who do torture and mutilate others are cruel, inhumane and sick and must be punished by the law in order to stop engaging in this type of abuse and cruely

I detest that in America if a White, Asian or Hispanic child is murdered they create a law in their honor but when an African-American child like Devin Brown is murdered by racist cops not only is there no law made in their honor but the racist cops are acquitted and if they write a book if I did it you don't see them coughing up the dough for the greiving African-American mothers whose children they have killed.

How can we expect our own people here in the states to stop the violence when we support violence in other countries or we make decisions to inhance violence on others. Everything you do to someone else will come back on you and your families! Until we in force peace and learn that communicaion is the solution and not violence this world is headed for self destrucion. It is normal for people to disagree and have their own valued opinions and not have to result to war and threats because not everyone agreed or shared a different view. This is what makes the world what it is. If our maker wanted everyone the same or to have the same ideas or views what a boring place it would be. Remember there would not be a need for you nor myself or our generations of people!

If the U.S. insists on strong-arming our way of life on others, surely we as Americans should include our country's voice against use of child soldiers.

Much of Africa is in the grip of political unrest, genocide or ethnic cleansing, and Global climate change+overpopulation. Peacekeepers must be dispatched in a calition of sufficent strength to quickly qwell all violence.
