Protect Medical Marijuana Patients

Target: U.S. House of Representatives
Sponsored by: Drug Policy Alliance

Numerous studies suggest that marijuana has medical value in treating patients with serious illnesses such as AIDS, cancer, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, glaucoma, and chronic pain. The Bush Administration, however, continues to arrest medical marijuana patients and their caregivers even though twelve states have legalized marijuana for medical use.

For patients for whom conventional therapies are ineffective, marijuana is an important way to reduce their suffering, and now Representative Barney Frank (D-MA) has introduced a bill in Congress that would protect patients and their caregivers, let states set their own medical marijuana policies, and change marijuana's legal status so doctors can prescribe it.

Please take action today to support this bill!

We urge you to co-sponsor and support HR 5842, the Medical Marijuana Patient Protection Act. This bill would protect cancer and AIDS patients who use marijuana for medical use from arrest, let states set their own medical marijuana policies, and re-schedule marijuana so doctors can prescribe it. Twelve states have legalized marijuana for medical use (Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington). Unfortunately, the U.S. Justice Department continues to arrest medical marijuana patients and their caregivers, despite overwhelming evidence that marijuana has enormous medical value.

this is the only cure for these people. Look at the horrendous side affects of other drugs or alternatives to this type of treatment. If it is working for them, and they are not abusing it, then what is the problem.

I do not understand why George Bush and his cohorts are doing this. Like I said before, if this is helping people have a quality of life, why not? Can it be any worse than the other drugs that doctors prescribe their patients? Or is it because it is treated as a socially unacceptable drug?

Marijuana is god's healing plant, grown wildly. Marijuana is not a man-made chemical that freaks the brain out, it is a wild plant that is made to calm yourself. It is also used to take away pain and ease the mind. Patients could use this plant for pain-reliever, and for the mentally ill to calm their selves and think.

I Have Chronic Pain 24/7 and Oxycontin Helps me Stand, Walk and be able to Read and do other things that the PAIN would prevent me from doing. There Is No Medical Cure for what I have (Venus Stacis) and the long term side affects of Oxycontin are unknown to me ~ BUT ~ I Am VERY THANKFUL That I Have It as it Helps me Not Focus Upon the Pain and be able to do something Constructive, as Read and Write and Minister Unto Others.

My husband is prescribed marinol for his tourette syndrome and to date there has not been a better help to him while not a cure all by any means it does help with his only side effect being that he has an increase in appetite.I there for am all for the medicinal use of Marijuana but do think that people not prescribed it should still be treated as criminals if caught with it.

Not only is it valuable for basic internal medicine, and has been for centuries in may cultures we consider wisened, it has been overlooked for its psychological uses. It is much less dangerous than currently over-prescribed, AND LEGAL, benzodiazapines... such as prozac, zoloft and klonapin, all of which have had many negative side afftects that on occasion lead to death. When was the last time someone overdosed on marijuana? Or in a pot induced insanity killed a whole family and then themselves. The prohibition of marijuana is an archaic law that needs to be changed.

Marijuana also helps people who suffer from FAS, FASD, FAE, ARND, ADD/ADHD, ODD, ICD, varieties of ANXIETY, and the list is virtually endless. Marijuana is a natural herb that has countless uses, once cannot become overintoxicated, doesn't cause deaths, etc. Please legalize marijuana once again and get rid of all the untruthful propaganda lies of the early 1900's before it was made illegal. Truth be know, alcohol harms and alcohol kills. Marijuana does not harm and does not kill!@

Stop the politicizing of medical marijuana, this is a matter of medicine and science, not politicians and lawyers. Unfortunately, there is too much money preventing the legal introduction of marijuana into the marketplace or pharmacopia. The lies have been told for so long and so many want to blame marijuana as a gateway drug to addiction; I say to them look at the truth - and the gateway drugs are alcohol, cigarettes, and mom's & dad's pain meds which were always the most accessible for mischief and then where ever else they lead. More important and relevant are the many people helped, their lives improved, even surviving because of the benefit of the medicine, marijuana. Please support HR 5842.

there is evidence to support the fact that marijuana is a safe and effective medicine. there is no good reason for the federal government to interfere!
