Protect Medical Marijuana Patients

Target: U.S. House of Representatives
Sponsored by: Drug Policy Alliance

Numerous studies suggest that marijuana has medical value in treating patients with serious illnesses such as AIDS, cancer, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, glaucoma, and chronic pain. The Bush Administration, however, continues to arrest medical marijuana patients and their caregivers even though twelve states have legalized marijuana for medical use.

For patients for whom conventional therapies are ineffective, marijuana is an important way to reduce their suffering, and now Representative Barney Frank (D-MA) has introduced a bill in Congress that would protect patients and their caregivers, let states set their own medical marijuana policies, and change marijuana's legal status so doctors can prescribe it.

Please take action today to support this bill!

We urge you to co-sponsor and support HR 5842, the Medical Marijuana Patient Protection Act. This bill would protect cancer and AIDS patients who use marijuana for medical use from arrest, let states set their own medical marijuana policies, and re-schedule marijuana so doctors can prescribe it. Twelve states have legalized marijuana for medical use (Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington). Unfortunately, the U.S. Justice Department continues to arrest medical marijuana patients and their caregivers, despite overwhelming evidence that marijuana has enormous medical value.

Please. If you watch patients suffer you must let them use marijuana to keep them alive. They will starve long before the cancer gets them. Help other patients with other diseases

I can interact with other people and im able to drive a car at times to where I did not feel comfortable doing on opiates.

By all means it is very important! people can eat, get pain relief, be able to relax and sleep. It does have enormous medical value. I believe for them and pain suffers with back and neck pain. weather the government wants to believe it or not it helps! Safer then drinking, and a lot of the prescription the doctors prescribe ! To many side affects that aren't safe. But that is just my opinion. I don't believe they should be arrested. The police and government have more important things to worry about( meth., heroin, sex offenders the list goes on and on. Thank you, please respect what people need.

I have followed this issue for several decades and I believe there is very persuasive evidence of marijuana's efficacy against several medical conditions, such as the pain associated with spinal cord damage. And there is some evidence that it may be useful for treating Alzheimer's Disease--which is of considerable interest to those of us in the over-65 category.

I think a lot of people, especially, terminally ill patients could use marijuana to alleviate symptoms of their diseases without negative side affects.

I suffer from MS which causes neurogenic pain, tremors and dystonia among other maladies, depression being another one. Cannabis has been found more effective for my dystonia than muscle relaxers, or benzodiazepenes, and can totally stop the tremors.

As a Doctor of Psychology who treated patients with AIDS, cancer and other chronic illnesses, I noted that many could not endure prescription drugs. The use of medical marijuana for these patients has been very rewarding. One patient who was hit by a bus at the age of 10, pronounced dead, then in a coma for 3 months... was unable to tolerate any prescribed medications. Many of the medications caused other complications and there was no relief from pain. After suffering for over 25 years, this patient visited a compassionate doctor who recommended medical marijuana. This patient is now enjoying a normal life, with relief from pain, a part-time job and is finishing college. The government should legalize medical marijuana - Finally!
