Oppose New Nuclear Weapons Today

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: Union Of Concerned Scientists
The Bush administration has asked for $8.5 million in the 2006 budget for research on a "Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator" (RNEP). This new nuclear weapon, also known as the nuclear "bunker buster," is being promoted as a useful tool in attacking deeply buried command centers or underground stores of chemical and biological weapons. But numerous scientific critiques, including one by the National Academy of Science, find that in many cases such a weapon would be ineffective. In addition, the nuclear blast and radioactive fall-out could kill millions of innocent people in surrounding areas. A single "bunker buster" would be nearly 100 times more powerful than the nuclear bomb that destroyed Hiroshima.

In the coming weeks, the Senate will consider funding for this new nuclear weapon. Please tell your Senators to reject all funding for the dangerous nuclear "bunker buster."
deadline: 7-11-2005

Dear Senator,

I am greatly opposed to the Administration's proposal to seek funding for research on a Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator (RNEP). This nuclear weapon is not needed, sets the United States on a new course of developing nuclear war fighting weapons, and sends a counterproductive message to the international community at a time when we are trying to discourage other nations from developing nuclear weapons. I hope that you will support Senator Feinstein's amendment to eliminate funding for the RNEP program.

As you know, RNEP is intended to destroy deeply buried bunkers and/or underground stores of chemical or biological weapons. However, a recent National Academy of Sciences study (http://books.nap.edu/catalog/11282.html?onpi_newsdoc04272005) concludes that the weapon would have limited utility against such targets, and that its use could kill millions of people downwind from the explosion. Moreover, the United States already has precision conventional weapons that could collapse all entrances and exits to underground bunkers.

To illustrate the technical realities of the RNEP weapon, the Union of Concerned Scientists has produced a two-minute flash video that shows both the weapon's technical shortcomings and the consequences of its use. I strongly recommend that you and your staff consider and use this important resource--it can be found at: http://www.ucsusa.org/global_security/nuclear_weapons/page.cfm?pageID=1781

Finally, I believe that Congress needs to match their words with their actions when addressing the cause of nuclear proliferation. If we are calling on other nations to refrain from building nuclear weapons, we should refrain as well.

I look forward to hearing your position on this important issue and hope that you will support Senator Feinstein’s amendment to deny all funding for the RNEP program.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
We signed the “Oppose New Nuclear Weapons Today” petition!

We have enough super-weapons now to destroy everything on earth a thousand times. Who is going to profit from the doomsday super-penetrating nuclear weapons? Haliburton again? Haliburton's (or whosever) CEOs will spend their ill-gotten gains for super-yaughts and other super-trinkets, but the planet will smother under all the useless but permanently harmful weapons made by the draft-dodgers currently in power in the White House and Congress.

Nuclear weapons pose a prisoner's dilemma. If the world cooperates effectively, we can all avoid the horrors of nuclear weaponry. Or, by continuing their production and geopolitical importance, we can ensure that they will be something all have to contend with. Let's not be prisoner to fear. The last things we need are "bunker busters" or any other new nukes.

We are already well on the way to self-extinction of the human race; if we do not now reverse severe environmental degradation trends and clean up our planet, we are gone. We have already placed depleted uranium in Iraq & elsewhere which has a HALF LIFE of ~4.5 BILLION years, small particles of which will become airborne. How damn dumb are we. We definitely should halt further production of nuclear weaponry. Tax monies are to be used for the benefit of we the people, not further profit for the warmongering industries.

We cannot morally consider ADDING new "useable'" nuclear weapson. "USEABLE" is not a word you can morally put with nuclear weapons. In addition, we cannot tell the rest of the world to disarm or not to develop nuclear weapons when we are NOT making major moves to disarm and ARE planning to develop these new weapons. The rest of the world won't buy or tolerate this double standard and we will be launching a new nuclear weapons race. In fact, we already have caused Iran and North Korea to busy themselves in this endeavor by our actions and words in recent years. WE DO NOT NEED TO DEVELOP THESE NEW WEAPONS! THEY WILL HARM US, NOT HELP US!

WMDs are the biggest threat to our National Security and other nations'. In the hands of terrorists, they could be used in the worst possible way(s). Help protect innocent people everywhere from the greatest threat we fear, nuclear fallout.

Nuclear weapons can NEVER make us safer. Never. At BEST, they will poison the environment when tested and result in still more radioactive waste that cannot be safely disposed of. INEVITABLY, they will encourage our enemies to redouble their efforts to build and deploy such weapons against us. AND FINALLY, no number of mushroom clouds can make us safer, no nuclear weapon can be used without causing agonizing death and hideous damage to untold people including our own men and women. THIS IS WRONG, EVIL, AND ABSOLUTELY UNWORTHY OF ANY NATION LET ALONE THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

The problem facing this country has not ceased to be cooperating in the elimination of the world's nuclear arsenals and disposal of present and continuing waste. Waste disposal takes greater priority as we look at the option of nuclear power to replace the worlds non-renewable energy resources. There were only so many dinosaurs back when the oil reserves were only an energy promise. Now, if this Republican war machine continues with insane plans like the "Bunker Buster", it appears that we shall be dinosaurs, too. Our remains will serve the new ruling race of radioactive cockroaches.

No moral human being could support the development of nuclear weapons. A short-sighted one, yes. A frightened one, yes. A mad one, yes. A racist one, yes. But a moral one? Impossible.

if i do remember correctly, Einstein meant for nuclear physics to heal, not to bomb and totally destroy other countries

I believe there should be no forms of any nuclear weapons in any part of this world especially this country. This country should be the leader in elminating all forms of nuclear weapons and NOT increasing them. WE are a "Free Nation," that should be showing the example to the whole world that there is "NO REASON" to develope are contain any "weapons of mass destruction," in other words nuclear weapons or how Mr. Cheney calls them, "NUCLEAR MIGHT." This country sounds off the alarm when other nations test or build nuclear weapons and state they are a threat to the world, well, this nation needs to show a very good example and elminate all of these weapons without a second cause. You cannot state that you are oppose to nuclear weapons when in reality you are building a Nuclear Weapons Program to harm the world. That is NOT a good example for this world to see, not a good example at all. I STRONGLY oppose any form of nuclear weapons. I have stated that many, many times. I need NOT say more on this matter.

How many generations will it take us to realize that making bigger bombs (and using them!) will never solve the problems of the world. I am angry that tax dollars go into this short-sighted, useless, undertaking. If all that money could be channeled into helping all the nations of the world to abolish poverty, provide housing and health care to their citizens, to educate the uneducated, and to foster a spirit of REAL humanity among peoples (and their animal brethren), think how little motivation and need there would be to produce such weapons!

Our Country's previous leaders signed agreements to stop neucleor weapon productions and to disarm long range nukes. Remember? These types of weapons are the most terroristic of any. Think about it! What controls radioactive fallout and the effects on peoples nearby? What cleans up the mess from our environment? The entire World is the environment, not just the part near where we live. Wake up! Think of the future and our descendants, and quit thinking of only your war mongering selves! You can't end terrorism by becoming the biggest terrorist!

The only good nuke is the one that wasn't built. These WMD are the thing we don't want other countries to have, so why shouldn't we set the example to outlaw these weapons ?

Not a good idea to keep building extremely dangerous weapons as a means to gain peace. Please PRAY before you make a decision. Thank you...
