The Bush administration has asked for $8.5 million in the 2006 budget for research on a "Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator" (RNEP). This new nuclear weapon, also known as the nuclear "bunker buster," is being promoted as a useful tool in attacking deeply buried command centers or underground stores of chemical and biological weapons. But numerous scientific critiques, including one by the National Academy of Science, find that in many cases such a weapon would be ineffective. In addition, the nuclear blast and radioactive fall-out could kill millions of innocent people in surrounding areas. A single "bunker buster" would be nearly 100 times more powerful than the nuclear bomb that destroyed Hiroshima.
In the coming weeks, the Senate will consider funding for this new nuclear weapon. Please tell your Senators to reject all funding for the dangerous nuclear "bunker buster."
We signed the “Oppose New Nuclear Weapons Today” petition!

We already have an insane number of nuclear weapons. We should be reducing our stockpile, not increasing it. After all, they could fall into the hands of a terrorist someday. Gad. Are people totally nuts?

We need to abolish weapons not build new ones.
In a world without weapons everyone could live - we could eradicate hunger

My family has been in the military and I believe in a strong national defense and fighting actual terrorism anywhere it rears its ugly head. However, this administration has such a history of outright deception and ignorance as well as substantial profits being made for "friends"--how can we allow them to make such a huge important decision when all trust has been lost? I love my country and am very patriotic but sometimes I distrust and detest my own government--this is one of those times. This is a different war than after Pearl Harbor and we are being manipulated big time! Please do the right thing on this important issue!!

Is the act of nuclear war to eliminate the world we live in or just not being able to be "good neighors" to feed the hungry and heal the sick no matter where they living on the Earth!

In these very dangerous times the threat to our nation's security lies in many areas; certainly not in Iraq. The genie is out of the bottle now with North Korea, Israel, India and shortly Iran having nuclear (not "nuculer"-this clarification for our imbecile president) capabilites. All these countries might not hesitate to use them in their ongoing conflicts and as they continue to have them, others, including their avowed enemies, want them also. This escalation only makes the world's security a sham. This situation does not even address the left over nukes in Russia which for profit could easily fall into the hands of real terrorists. For our nation to continue to manufacture these weapons destabilizes the world as we are the leading military armaments manufacturing nation in the world.
Our government cannot preach Peace and Freedom while engaging in selective warfare, increasing furious hatred toward our nation by those disenfranchised from our choices and all the while while selling weapons for profit. The technology is now available for those disenfranchised groups, not necessarily nations only, to pursue and develop their own nuclear weapons. At the rate we are going, they can easily obtain some of the materials from the USA.
Enough is enough. I am old enough to remember the cold war but many of our citizens are not and seem oblivious to this danger. We should actively be disarming and encouraging other nations, by our actions, to do the same.

What a hypocritical nation we have become. Telling others no nukes, while developing more of our own. This administration disgusts me.

Wars are not the answer to solving problems. They lead to nothing but death and destruction. Nuclear weapons will do worse. They will lead to proliferation and eventual oblivion of mankind because the environment will not be able to recover.

We can't ask other countries not to make nuclear missiles or even products which could result in these, if we ourselves continue. We must be an example, the right example. Say no to this proposal.

Dear Senator,
We do not not need more lethal weapons so we can kill more efficently. What we truly need are wise men and women in the position of authority to lead us towards peace, not perpetual war. What has happened to America? The very fact that Team Bush is pursuing plutonium 238 (only a tiny speck can kill a man) and nuclear bunker busters is cause for great alarm. We do not need these weapons, we need leaders that can lead using diplomacy, men and women willing to disarm each and every bombs.

The U.S., the big bully on the block should take a step back for a change and re-evaluate our weapons programs in light of China's quickly growing economic and military power. China not only holds a big economic stick over the U.S. by holding $200 billion in our Treasury debt but they are using billions from exporting goods to the U.S. in funding their own military arms proliferation. Someday they may turn on us and use this much bigger stick as a reminder of the example we set in the year 2003 when we invaded Iraq.
