Don't Abandon Pets in Disasters

Target: The U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: The Humane Society of the United States
Rescue animals stranded by Katrina, and don'’t let animals be forgotten again!

Sign this petition to support The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS Act, H.R. 3858), currently in Congress, that will protect pets in federal evacuation plans, and urge officials to save currently stranded pets.

Some Hurricane Katrina victims refused to leave home because they couldn't take their animals with them, resulting in even more casualties. Furthermore, the Humane Society of the United States believes that while more than 7,000 animals have been saved in Mississippi and Louisiana, hundreds more may still be in need of rescue more than a month after Katrina hit. Pressure is still needed to save these animals, and a formal policy is needed to protect pets in future disasters, like Hurricane Rita.

Dear Representative,

Federal disaster grants to state and local governments should include plans to protect pets in their evacuation plans.

Please support The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS Act, H.R. 3858), sponsored by Reps. Tom Lantos, Christopher Shays, Barney Frank, Don Young and James Oberstar. This new bill would require that the state and local disaster preparedness plans required for Federal Emergency Management Agency funding include provisions that will protect household pets and service animals.

In addition, please send immediate aide to save the animals stranded by Hurricane Katrina. Already, animal protection groups are working overtime to save the animals they can, but they need more help. Please help families who lost nearly everything in the hurricane be reunited with their beloved animals.
We signed the “Don't Abandon Pets in Disasters” petition!

My pets are an integral part of my family so it would be like leaving a child behind. If my pet could not go - then I wouldn't.

In Germany - my native country - animals do have constitutional right. I would never have expected, that a civilized nation like the U.S.A. excludes peoples pets from being evacuated or rescued. The law needs to be changed urgently. During the past 3 weeks, more than 85.000 signatures were already collected, asking to help the pets affected by hurricane KATRINA. However no statement has been made by President Bush so far. The Government shows NO respect for animals and environment.

Pets are part of the family. It's obvious since so many wouldn't evacuate because they were forced to leave animals behind. Don't let this tragedy continue

We take a pet with love in our hearts. How can anyone be expected to leave that piece of heart behind to face terror and possibly death alone. I could not do it.

Most animal companions are not wildlife but family members and them as well humans fear, feel hunger and pain and should not be forgotten alone facing what we humans can't face... It's just a matter of family bonds and justice.

Many people died because they wouldn't leave the one thing they had left, their pet. Nowadays, pets are usually a family member. You can't ask people to leave their family members behind to face possible death, alone and abandoned. Many dogs that came to Los Angeles this week had a look of "what did I do wrong?" and "where is my person?" Help the pets and animals. Please help them - we have the resources.

Too many people risked injury and death to remain with their animals because they could not take them to shelters during Hurricane Katrina. Too many other people had to leave their animals behind, and were thus doubly traumatized by having to flee disaster without their beloved pets. According to the 2003-2004 National Pet Owners Survey, 39% of American households own at least one dog, and 34% own at least one cat. Evacuation plans must include animals.
