Don't Abandon Pets in Disasters

Target: The U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: The Humane Society of the United States
Rescue animals stranded by Katrina, and don'Â’t let animals be forgotten again!

Sign this petition to support The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS Act, H.R. 3858), currently in Congress, that will protect pets in federal evacuation plans, and urge officials to save currently stranded pets.

Some Hurricane Katrina victims refused to leave home because they couldn't take their animals with them, resulting in even more casualties. Furthermore, the Humane Society of the United States believes that while more than 7,000 animals have been saved in Mississippi and Louisiana, hundreds more may still be in need of rescue more than a month after Katrina hit. Pressure is still needed to save these animals, and a formal policy is needed to protect pets in future disasters, like Hurricane Rita.

Dear Representative,

Federal disaster grants to state and local governments should include plans to protect pets in their evacuation plans.

Please support The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS Act, H.R. 3858), sponsored by Reps. Tom Lantos, Christopher Shays, Barney Frank, Don Young and James Oberstar. This new bill would require that the state and local disaster preparedness plans required for Federal Emergency Management Agency funding include provisions that will protect household pets and service animals.

In addition, please send immediate aide to save the animals stranded by Hurricane Katrina. Already, animal protection groups are working overtime to save the animals they can, but they need more help. Please help families who lost nearly everything in the hurricane be reunited with their beloved animals.
We signed the “Don't Abandon Pets in Disasters” petition!

While humans must be of primary concern, MANY pet owners would rather endanger their own lives rather than abandon members of their family, which is how many pets are perceived. If AT ALL POSSIBLE, some mechanisms MUST be in place for the rescue of pets. As a police officer, supervisor and pet owner, I know that volunteers could be found.

It is cruel to leave any animal behind. I would never leave my house without my cat. No animal should have to suffer!

Animals make the world go around. Imagine life without a single animal. No fish, no house pets to give unconditional love, no beautiful birds in the sky. Imagine it. You can't right? Me either. Spend the same amount of time you spend on finding people. Animals deserve to be treated like kings and queens. They MAKE THE WORLD GO AROUND.

Animals cannot be left to suffer - they are living beings as well. It's cruel -I would refuse to leave my 2 dogs in a disaster.

many people sacfriced their OWn saftey by refusing to leave their pets behind in these disasters. This is a sign that pets viewed as members of the family should be treated as such.

Animals are often a very important part of a family that is caught in disaster situations, something should be done to ensure that these animals do not end up being left behind, and most often dying. This SHOULD also include livestock, and if possible wildlife rescue also.

A formal policy is needed to save animals in the future when disasters occur. They need our protection as well Can you imagine how terrified they are when something like huricanes, tornados, and earthquakes strike. They really do not know what is happening. Let's protect them when these things happen and not let people risk both (themselves and their animals) lives by not wanting to leave their animals when disasters happen. I have a 17 year old kitty and I wouldn't want to leave her either.
