Don't Abandon Pets in Disasters
Target: The U.S. CongressSponsored by: The Humane Society of the United States
Rescue animals stranded by Katrina, and don'Â’t let animals be forgotten again!
Sign this petition to support The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS Act, H.R. 3858), currently in Congress, that will protect pets in federal evacuation plans, and urge officials to save currently stranded pets.
Some Hurricane Katrina victims refused to leave home because they couldn't take their animals with them, resulting in even more casualties. Furthermore, the Humane Society of the United States believes that while more than 7,000 animals have been saved in Mississippi and Louisiana, hundreds more may still be in need of rescue more than a month after Katrina hit. Pressure is still needed to save these animals, and a formal policy is needed to protect pets in future disasters, like Hurricane Rita.

Going through many Hurricanes in my life, the last two (Ivan & Katrina) I was faced with the problem of what to do with my pets. We choose them to live with us as a part of our family. They have no voice or defense from disasters. We have to make provisions for them, as we do people. I would not leave them behind, anymore that I would leave my family. Saving pets will save human lives! |

We adopt animals in order to care for them & give them a loving home. They are part of the family & we love them with all our heart. We do not adopt them to abandon them & leave them to drown or fend for themselves. It is our responsibility to protect those entrusted to our care. You'll save more people by saving ALL their family members. I couldn't live with myself if I knew I saved myself & didn't live up to my responsibilities & save my pets.

Animals are a lot more sensitive and they can predict whether their owner will come through for them. It's tramatizing for the animal that their owner just left them and they won't be there for the animal. |

Anyone can imagine how terrifying it would be to be alone, with flood waters rising, and with pain consuming them - awaiting an inevitable death. Animals experience this exact same fear and pain. People need to realize that; the emotions and pain we would feel in this situation are exactly the same to those animals would feel. To know this and only protect humans is an unbelievably arrogant, cruel and ruthless thing to do.
