Don't Abandon Pets in Disasters
Target: The U.S. CongressSponsored by: The Humane Society of the United States
Rescue animals stranded by Katrina, and don'Â’t let animals be forgotten again!
Sign this petition to support The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS Act, H.R. 3858), currently in Congress, that will protect pets in federal evacuation plans, and urge officials to save currently stranded pets.
Some Hurricane Katrina victims refused to leave home because they couldn't take their animals with them, resulting in even more casualties. Furthermore, the Humane Society of the United States believes that while more than 7,000 animals have been saved in Mississippi and Louisiana, hundreds more may still be in need of rescue more than a month after Katrina hit. Pressure is still needed to save these animals, and a formal policy is needed to protect pets in future disasters, like Hurricane Rita.

People that have to go through such a horrible ordeal have already lost so much, why wouldn't you save their pets for them to help ease the pain. Imagine a little boy lost everything, his whole family, now wouldn't it make your life to see his face light up when you reunite him with his best friend. People love their pets like their family and in accordance they should be treated in that way. In the case of Katrina the rescue efforts made by our government was a joke, they treated all those innocent people worse then pets and someone should be held liable for the atrocities those poor victims had to undergo.

An animal is not capable of taking care of itself and knowing how/when to evacuate, we as humans must take care the weaker by assisting them in every situation. If I were in a situation in which I had to evacuate my hime, my dog would be right by my side, there would be no hesitation. |

I have a dog that I consider part of my family. I would be devasted if she couldn't be included in an evacuation. It's inhumane to allow an animal to be abandoned or perish needlessly.

How can we deem ourself a humane and compassionate society when we don't even take care of living creatures. Of course we'd do better to take care of all HUMANS and animals, but that combination won't happen.
