Don't Abandon Pets in Disasters

Target: The U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: The Humane Society of the United States
Rescue animals stranded by Katrina, and don'’t let animals be forgotten again!

Sign this petition to support The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS Act, H.R. 3858), currently in Congress, that will protect pets in federal evacuation plans, and urge officials to save currently stranded pets.

Some Hurricane Katrina victims refused to leave home because they couldn't take their animals with them, resulting in even more casualties. Furthermore, the Humane Society of the United States believes that while more than 7,000 animals have been saved in Mississippi and Louisiana, hundreds more may still be in need of rescue more than a month after Katrina hit. Pressure is still needed to save these animals, and a formal policy is needed to protect pets in future disasters, like Hurricane Rita.

Dear Representative,

Federal disaster grants to state and local governments should include plans to protect pets in their evacuation plans.

Please support The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS Act, H.R. 3858), sponsored by Reps. Tom Lantos, Christopher Shays, Barney Frank, Don Young and James Oberstar. This new bill would require that the state and local disaster preparedness plans required for Federal Emergency Management Agency funding include provisions that will protect household pets and service animals.

In addition, please send immediate aide to save the animals stranded by Hurricane Katrina. Already, animal protection groups are working overtime to save the animals they can, but they need more help. Please help families who lost nearly everything in the hurricane be reunited with their beloved animals.
We signed the “Don't Abandon Pets in Disasters” petition!

Many pet owners would choose to stay if presented with the terrible choice of staying with their pet vs. leaving their pets behind. Please don't make them choose.

It is an outrage that these people were not able to save themselves and pets at the same time. It is cruel in the immediate sense of leaving behind animals to die and cruel in the longterm - having people mourn the loss of a pet and their homes/family members/all their belongings.

Pets are family. They are living beings and deserve to be rescued.

Please make it legal to bring out these beloved pets in an evacuation situation. When you have nothing left, the presence of your beloved pet can make all the difference. If one knows that he/she can take their pet with them we will have a significantly higher percentage of people who evacuate. This will save time and money and heartbreak in the long run. PLEASE HELP THE ANIMALS!!!

I will never evacuate if I cannot take my cats with me. Where I go, they go, that is the commitment I made to them when I brought them home!

Animals are part of the American family. Why wouldn't we include them in all family rescue efforts?

Too many people love their pets in this day and age and will stay behind to save them if shelters do not accept them and they have no transportation to take their animals with them, and if they stay behind and rescuers wont take their animals, they wont leave and if they do they are devastated. These people have lost everything and these people are emotionally attached to their pets. Please pass legislation to make pets included in evacuations.

It inhumane to leave pets behind during any disaster and federal assistance should allow those with pets to be allowed to take them to safety.

As a resident of San Francisco, a site which could very well be the next location for natural disaster, I can't imagine having to make a choice between my life or my pets. I have done all in my power to prepare to evacuate with my pets but for many people who do not have my resources, this is not a possibility. This is America, we have been blessed with a higher quality life than many in the world and this means having the ability to provide for animals in our care. Please assure the ability of evacuees to leave with their pets and avoid the cruel death of starvation and dehydration which awaits animals who are left behind, abandoned by those who had always cared for them. Thank you.

I can;t express enough how important this bill is to so many people who love their animals as much as any other family member. It would be like leaving my child behind if it were me.

When disaster strikes, we must be ready to be responsive and sympathetic. When responding to the needs of people's animals, we are not just dealing with property that may or may not be of significant economic value. We are dealing with fellow creatures capable of pain, fear, panic, depression and post-traumatic stress. We are dealing with individuals who are included in that expanded circle of caring... who are members of the family who we would brave hell or high water to save.

Its the humane and decent thing to do. People think of their pets as family and to some lonely people, they are the only family they have. Haven't you ever loved a pet? Pass this legislation

I read a story about a little boy waiting to evacuate New Orleans who cried until he vomited when he was told he wouldn't be able to take his dog with him on the bus. I still can't think about that without crying, and I'm sure that was the tip of the iceberg of heartbreaking stories from this particular disaster.

We need to make sure this NEVER happens again. My cats are all I have they are my family and I could never leave them even in a crisis. The entire Katrina fiasco should be prevented in the future at all costs.
