Oppose the Crawford Nomination: he's trying to block birth control, let's block him!

Target: U.S. Senators
Sponsored by: NARAL Pro-Choice America
President Bush has nominated Lester Crawford, who helped block attempts to improve womenÂ’s access to birth control, for the top job at the Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

During Crawford's tenure as acting commissioner, the FDA has ignored the recommendation from its own scientific and medical experts and blocked "Plan B", which is an application to make the morning-after pill available without a prescription.

Speak out with two Senate Democratic leaders, Patty Murray from Washington and Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, who are holding up his nomination until the FDA acts on the application.

Urge your senators to join Senators Murray and Clinton and oppose the Crawford nomination.

UPDATE: On July 15th, Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) and Patty Murray (D-WA) succeeded in pressuring the Food and Drug Administration to make a decision on "Plan B", a petition to make the "morning-after" pill available to women over the counter instead of by prescription.

The FDA now has until to September 1st to decide whether to go along with the doctors and scientists who overwhelmingly support giving women over-the-counter access to the pill or capitulate to pressure from the radical right, which strongly opposes the measure. Consequently, the senators have lifted their hold on Lester Crawford's nomination to become the new FDA Commissioner.

Dear Senator,

As your constituent, I urge you to oppose Lester Crawford's nomination as the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration.

Under Crawford's leadership, the FDA has refused to act on an application to make the Plan B emergency contraceptive available to women over the counter. Crawford has admitted that the agency has settled any scientific questions and safety issues around this form of birth control months ago. He cannot provide a compelling reason for why the FDA continues to refuse to rule on this application.

It is critical that the FDA function without bias. Crawford has yet to demonstrate that he can lead an agency where science - not politics - should dictate.

If you are serious about reducing the unintended pregnancies and thereby reducing the need for abortion in this country - something we should all agree upon - then urge Lester Crawford to make Plan B available without a prescription. Until he does so, I urge you to oppose his nomination.

Sincerely,
[your name]
We signed the “Oppose the Crawford Nomination: he's trying to block birth control, let's block him!” petition!

He has no idea about being a woman. So I belive he has no right to chose wether we keep birth control or not, and were we can purchase it.

It is imperative that women’s right to choose is protected at all costs. It is not the function of the American government to enforce morality onto its constituents. Just yesterday the U.S. Supreme Court handed down rulings that provide for the separation of church and state. If that separation becomes any more of an illusion that it is now, the ideas of American democracy will continue on in a state of perpetual ambiguity and contradiction. Can a nation that is so dedicated to pushing its ideals onto the rest of the world (e.g., the Iraqi citizens) do so effectively if it engages in grossly imperfect practices of those very same ideals? It is time that America learned the true meaning of democracy Senator.

Are we living in the Stone Age? Birth control is NOT an issue that should be dealt with as someone's (i.e., some religious neocon's) secret agenda. It is a medical necessity, and should be a protected right.

Women had no rights. Even former black slaves had more rights then we did at one point. We only recently got the right to vote. Bush is talking about outlawing abortion. Now, BIRTH CONTROL? Do they just want us to have children so we can overpopulate the Earth more? We cannot allow this. If they take away our right to protect ourselves during sex, then we really have nothing. IMPEACH BUSH.

I think that Lester Crawford should think about what the women think about this, why are we letting a man deal with birth and pregnancy issues? That makes no sense.

Isn't this country overpopulated enough. Not to metion you are actually saying that children should be born of rape. Or of parents that don't even want them. Or how about born to 12 and 13 year olds. Did you even think about this? Or is your head up your behind?

Because denying access to birth control (including emergency birth control) will turn the US into a frustrated, paranoid nation filled with unwanted children.

We do not need this type of narrow-minded ignorance in this country! It is 2005 - not 1905!

Inability to get the morning after pill does not prevent abortions, it merely makes sure that abortions take place at a later date with more suffering to the foetus.

Women have a right for access to birth control. If it was men who got pregnant, would birth control without prescription be blocked? I think not! Lets hope Lester Crawford will someday be blocked access to a medication that could save his life.

I may have my own beliefs as to what I would do or what is right for me...but I DEFINATELY believe in a womans right to choose!! It shouldn't be the decision of any Man to say what is right for me...Seems to me as if President Bush & his Henchmen are trying to turn back the clock. Wonder what he would say if he lost his right to choose....Women are not a herd of cattle.
