President Bush has nominated Lester Crawford, who helped block attempts to improve womens access to birth control, for the top job at the Food & Drug Administration (FDA).
During Crawford's tenure as acting commissioner, the FDA has ignored the recommendation from its own scientific and medical experts and blocked "Plan B", which is an application to make the morning-after pill available without a prescription.
Speak out with two Senate Democratic leaders, Patty Murray from Washington and Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, who are holding up his nomination until the FDA acts on the application.
Urge your senators to join Senators Murray and Clinton and oppose the Crawford nomination.
UPDATE: On July 15th, Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) and Patty Murray (D-WA) succeeded in pressuring the Food and Drug Administration
to make a decision on "Plan B", a petition to make the "morning-after" pill available to women over the counter instead of by prescription.
The FDA now has until to September 1st to decide whether to go along with the doctors and scientists who overwhelmingly support giving women
over-the-counter access to the pill or capitulate to pressure from the radical right, which strongly opposes the measure. Consequently, the senators have lifted
their hold on Lester Crawford's nomination to become the new FDA Commissioner.
We signed the “Oppose the Crawford Nomination: he's trying to block birth control, let's block him!” petition!

Mr. Crawford, unfortunately, allows his own ideology to cloud his decisions and administrative leadership. As Director of the FDA, it is important to have a Director that allows scientific proof to prevail.

The only way to reduce abortions is to reduce the incidence of unwanted pregnancy. We need safe ways to do this, scientifically tested. This nominee has ignored the scientific evidence and has worked to withold safe means of preventing pregnancy. He should NOT be in charge of the FDA, where he can continue to push his own agenda, in this and in other critical areas of our health. We need someone whose actions on behalf of our safety and health are supported by good, solid science, not ideology.

We do not want to go back to back street abortions which kill the women and/or their chances for future pregnancies. Birth control and family planning information is crucile for women and men to understand fully, whether it be here in the United States or overseas. this information can halt the spread of disease also. Please, do not take away our rights of choice.

Keeping birth control avaliable is the only way to stop abortion. When will anti-abortion advocates get that? Its also a fundemential right to have access to any medication that is legal, safe and needed to keep someone in proper health, which the pill also does for women who have problems with menstration ect.

Having a baby should be a well thought out decision between two consulting adults. A baby born to parents or to a parent that does not want it will have even less of a chance of having a fufilling life and of being a positive addition to our society. Therefore all forms of protection and proper planning, such as birth control should be available to all women so that they may live and reproduce when and how they feel is best.

Every woman should have the freedom of choice as to whether or not to bear children. Women bear children. Men or a group of people do not have the right to make a decision where a woman's own body is concerned. There are so many abused children in homes where they were not wanted in the first place and who never had the option to go up for adoption. I don't believe in the law making personal decisions for women and children. This is not a "protection from harm" law. It is invasive in a persons personal decisions and takes away the personal rights of women.

I really think that women need better access to birth controll. I have no problem with the morning after pill. I personally find abortion sad, and if we had better acess to birth controll, and women's health care, there would not be the need for abortion.

I am opposed to the Crawford nomination because of his position on birth control. No lives are lost, IT IS A PREVENATIVE measure for women who do not want to get pregnant, and should also be available to those low-income, uneducated women who have no business bringing more unwanted children into this already overpopulated world. It is just common sense! Let's work on preserving and supporting what we already have, not add more burdens to our society!
