Oppose the Crawford Nomination: he's trying to block birth control, let's block him!

Target: U.S. Senators
Sponsored by: NARAL Pro-Choice America
President Bush has nominated Lester Crawford, who helped block attempts to improve women’s access to birth control, for the top job at the Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

During Crawford's tenure as acting commissioner, the FDA has ignored the recommendation from its own scientific and medical experts and blocked "Plan B", which is an application to make the morning-after pill available without a prescription.

Speak out with two Senate Democratic leaders, Patty Murray from Washington and Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, who are holding up his nomination until the FDA acts on the application.

Urge your senators to join Senators Murray and Clinton and oppose the Crawford nomination.

UPDATE: On July 15th, Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) and Patty Murray (D-WA) succeeded in pressuring the Food and Drug Administration to make a decision on "Plan B", a petition to make the "morning-after" pill available to women over the counter instead of by prescription.

The FDA now has until to September 1st to decide whether to go along with the doctors and scientists who overwhelmingly support giving women over-the-counter access to the pill or capitulate to pressure from the radical right, which strongly opposes the measure. Consequently, the senators have lifted their hold on Lester Crawford's nomination to become the new FDA Commissioner.

Dear Senator,

As your constituent, I urge you to oppose Lester Crawford's nomination as the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration.

Under Crawford's leadership, the FDA has refused to act on an application to make the Plan B emergency contraceptive available to women over the counter. Crawford has admitted that the agency has settled any scientific questions and safety issues around this form of birth control months ago. He cannot provide a compelling reason for why the FDA continues to refuse to rule on this application.

It is critical that the FDA function without bias. Crawford has yet to demonstrate that he can lead an agency where science - not politics - should dictate.

If you are serious about reducing the unintended pregnancies and thereby reducing the need for abortion in this country - something we should all agree upon - then urge Lester Crawford to make Plan B available without a prescription. Until he does so, I urge you to oppose his nomination.

Sincerely,
[your name]
We signed the “Oppose the Crawford Nomination: he's trying to block birth control, let's block him!” petition!

It is not the Governments place to tell a woman what she can do with her own body! Keep out! Go clean up the environment before our planet is destroyed or stop the war!

I approve the Crawford nomination. Women and men have a responsiblity to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner. If pregnancy results then both the man and the woman is responsible for the procreation of that child and should be a combined decision to raise this child. Sex is not a sporting game. I don't believe in the morning after bill. Their are enough alternatives to unwanted pregnancies already on the market. Don't block Crawford.

If we want to reduce abortions and unwanted pregnancy, we need to educate people. Legislating is not the answer. The use of birth control is an individual woman's decision - not our government's..

I don't want ANY man to dictate what I do with my body. If I want access to any birth control agent - I should have the right to do so. DO NOT approve this man Crawford - he is putting his moral stance on my rights.

It's our body and we should be able to do what we want with it. We're already over populated and now this? It doesn't make much sense. Plus, I don't see them taking condoms away, why is it the man's choice? We're fully able to take control of our lifes and our gift.

Girls who are raped are too scared to tell their parents or a doctor, this will give them an option to keep it secret and avoid pregnancy.

The morning after pill should be available to women without a prescription. Since the morning after pill takes action before the egg is fertilized, it is not an abortion. The morning after pill needs to be available to women who wish to prevent unwanted pregnancy when it's too late to use birth control (such as condoms, IUD, etc). This would include rape victims, or women who are taken advantage of while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

It's not a mans place to decide what a woman does or doesnt do. It's only a woman chioce and no one else can say a thing about it.

Those who oppose women's right to control their own fertility are also the ones who are the first to call women who need help to support the resulting children "welfare queens." They only care about the fetus until it's born, then they couldn't care less about it, and they resent like hell having to pay taxes to help support it. Women do not need someone like Mr. Crawford to be the arbiter of our morals.

There is a place for values and morality- one's home, church, temple, neighborhood, etc. The FDA is not the place for anyone to impose their narrow-minded and often misinformed ideals upon others, it's job is to mind the health and well-being of the general public. We should make sure that those in charge of making decisions that drastically affect thousands of women has only one agenda- their overall well-being, not promoting his point-of-view through lack of choice.

Individuals like this SHOULD NOT be in charge of anything except maybe dog catcher. You should not allow people to force others to follow their beliefs.

I support Senators Clinton and Murray, woman should have access to safe methods of controlling our bodies. If you don't believe in specific medications, don't use them but allow those who do to do so. Women and children deserve a high quality of life and these choices contribute to that. Crawford and those like him want to force their beliefs on the rest of society. This should be a medical not philosophic debate as to the safety not morality of medicine.

Please don't forget women's rights! Try to imagine how you would feel to have someone tell you how to care for your own body! Remember this as you contemplate speaking your mind regarding this preposterous nomination. Thank you in advance for caring about women's rights

I am opposed to Crawford's nomination in name of personal rights and freedom of choice. We know the issues at stake here... does he? Or is he just taking advantage of this nomination to further his own Personal beliefs (and those of Mr. Bush)? Smaks of male chauvanistic control to me...

I feel that a woman should ALWAYS have a right to choose who/what/where/why touches her body, this would apply to a law as much, if not MORE than anything else. Abortion should not be a form of birth control, but nevertheless, that is MY opinion. I would not push it on anybody else. We have gone through this arguement already, and won. Let's move forward, not backwards!

Please do not prioritize your own opinions over the health of women. Women have fought for so long for their right to choice. With one swift nomination, you could go against the beliefs of nearly half the nation. Women are not a special-interest group. We can make our own decisions.
